So, last week I was still full blown chest cold. I did manage to play a few games of vball on Tuesday, but that was it. I concentrated on trying to get better and not aggravate things.
I spent Saturday night at Mt Princeton Hot Springs with some forumites and did much soaking. That REALLY helped. So, Monday, I left myself sleep in before work (ie. I didn't get up at 4:30am to go to spin class) as that was to be my last recovery day.
I am finally well enough this week to start back to my workout program and I am THRILLED! I hate that it has taken me a month to get past this.

I am finally well enough this week to start back to my workout program and I am THRILLED! I hate that it has taken me a month to get past this. Recently, I decided to take BSU up on joining in on one of their older persons fitness studies. The offer of free time with personal trainers, regular medical progress check ups and more was a bit too good to pass up. So there were, people within +/-5 years of my age, being asked to separate out into 3 groups of those who thought they were fit, those who are moderately fit, and those who were not fit. I got into the larger middle group, two people got into the not fit, and two people got into the fit group. We began by walking around the track and went from there, where they began to move people around to different groups. I was quickly moved into the fit group where we were asked to do more and harder whiles the not so fit group grew larger. I saw lots of notes being taken. Anyways, I was pulled aside and told that I was outside of the study groups parameters, I was asked a lot of questions about my current fitness and was dismissed. Yes, dismissed! And boy did that make me feel great, I'm a fat old man who is too fit for a physical fitness study group! Boy howdy.

I was sick this entire last month and didn't move much while letting my body rest. It is just nice to be able to move again and get my heart rate up. It's amazing how much I have missed that! I scheduled my first triathlon for mid-June. It will be my first age-group start and wet suit legal. Sorry husband, it's the day after our anniversary. lol Now to figure out when I'll be scheduling the rest of my tri's this summer. Pretty excited, yet I'm a little torn as training tends to take away all of my free time (and mountain climbing time as I don't want to injure myself). Excited to see where this year takes me!

Today I did 65 minutes on the treadmill at 8% grade and 3.7 mph. I could do that. If the grade is negative...

M: 200 burpees during the SU women's basketball game. Tu: Shovel snow in the morning. Walk dog 1.5 miles. 250 burpees during the SU men's basketball game. W: Shovel snow in the morning and evening. Th: Shovel snow. F: Shovel out a company car at lunch. Not really necessary, but it was relatively warm and sunny, and I had been sitting all morning. Nothing in the evening, as I watched the kids while the wife out with her friends. Sa: Downhill ski all day. Nice conditions. Walk dog 1.5 miles. Su: Lightly active all day. Walk dog 1.5 miles. I'm now doing sets of 25 burpees and recovering well. Might be necessary since my Spartan race is this weekend and I haven't really been training. Good luck with your Spartan Race walkswithblackflies! Last week was a process of getting me back into the groove of things. I'm going to be seriously under-trained for my first race of the season, the Barkin' Dog Duathalon in April. M: Nothing Tu: Swim 600 yards W: 1 hour spin class Th: Nothing, this was the start of me working insane hours. F: Nothing, had to be into work early and left late. Sa: Snow storm predicted, so had to get errands finished before that moved in Su: Snow storm was a bust (only got 5'ish") so I went and swam 800 yards of kick and pull drills. I'm getting back into it, but it's so slow. After doing a short treadmill run this morning, I realized how much fitness I have lost from being sick. Just need to get back into the habit.

I’ve been away from this thread for far too long, but not away from exercise. It’s been a bit different, though—I’ve only been in a pool once since mid-December (swam laps for about 26 minutes in a pool at an Air BnB in January). But in January I hiked some 150 miles, and in Februrary in addition to more hiking, we resumed Body Pump classes (which do seem to help the knees on hikes, once I get past the really sore part) and some easy biking. We’re “settled” in Christchurch until the end of March, and bought ourselves a couple of used mountain/hybrid bikes just for getting around. I think today was my longest ride—11.75 miles. It’s only my hands that hurt, to my surprise (expected a sore bum, since we’d been away hiking the Milford Track).
Our challenge, after working so hard for January and parts of Feb., is not to get so caught up in enjoying being settled that we fail to keep fit, because we have some more very demanding hikes coming up in April.
I would like to find a pool, but I think it’s not very practical—I’d have to pay drop-in rates, which don’t look all that sustainable for my usual multiple swims per week. Maybe I can find someplace I’m comfortable and go once a week, just to keep my shoulders limber.

You guys are right, I think, though it’s too far to the beach to bike over there. But I keep meaning to see if it’s practical. The water on the west coast, being part of the Tasman Sea, was too cold and too rough for swimming. I’m not sure around here. Bear in mind I’ve never done open-water swimming, certainly not in the ocean. Thanks for the link, Ms. Doo—I will look into that.
