I'm also looking at this as a possible spring break (early March) destination. Will update if it happens.

I'm also looking at this as a possible spring break (early March) destination. Will update if it happens. Here is how I got to the study area turn off. If you're interested. I headed east on I-40 to Gallup, New Mexico and then headed north on Hwy 491 to Shiprock then east on Hwy 64 past Farmington to Bloomfield. Hwy 550 south out of Bloomfield leads to State road 57 which is the turnoff for the BLM’s Ah-Shi-Sle-Pah Wilderness Study Area. It was cloudy and a couple drops of rain had fallen. The road was paved for about a half mile then abruptly turns to rutted clay. The rain wasn’t threatening so I continued on for the 18 miles to the study area. By then the wind had picked up and a sand storm developed near the study area. The sand was white and was coming from the BLM land. I made it to the marked entrance road and had to stop mainly because I couldn’t see more than 10 feet in front of me. Then the rain got a little heavier and I made the decision to go back to the main road before the dirt road became impassable. I was so close to where I wanted to spend the night. I don’t regret turning around.
