I just looked it up and the SE has a 1821 mAh battery so you don't need that big of a backup battery. The higher end phones now are over 4000 mAh. I carry an Anker 10,000 mAh backup (212g). The SE does support fast charging so you would want a battery pack that supports that.

They also offer all the USGS maps for free. At least in my area they want $2 for some of the topos. Avenza has a lot of different maps for sale and some are very worth it. I’ve spent $70 with them. But I’ve also been able to find every USGS 7.5” quad after searching and they are free. Try searching on the exact name of the quad. That is the best way as every map you get from the Avenza store is active. They do let you import maps but when you do that only two imported maps can be active. Search this site for tons of free maps. ngmdb.usgs.gov/topoview/viewer/#4/40.01/-100.06I select 1:24000 and then start zooming in to the area of interest and the names on the quads will appear. You can go back to the Avenza app to the store and search on the exact name. If that doesn’t work you can download the map you want from the USGS site and share it with Avenza. I think it’s the GeoTiff version that works with Avenza. I have seen some Forest Service maps that cost a few bucks but the USGS stuff should all be free unless it is someone’s enhanced version. If you can’t find a specific USGS quad for free let me know the exact name and I’ll give it a shot. The search function is a bit strange but there are tons of material to explore.

You may know this but where there is no cell coverage the phone will keep transmitting at full power trying to get in touch with a head station wasting battery. You can turn off the phone or just turn off mobile data to stop this. Also there is no reason usually to have the phone's WiFi turned on out in the woods.

Interesting, I hadn't realized that, but that seems like a pretty big benefit, especially given that the SE battery seems to last almost as long as the iphone 12 and 13. I recently purchased a 10,000 mAh battery pack, but perhaps I won't need it. Since I won't have a phone plan, I guess I will always just keep it in airplane mode, and will keep the wifi turned off (unless I need to download apps). My expectation is that it will spend most of the time turned off in my pack. I'm assuming this will address this issue?

The cell phone battery will last a long time, multiple days, when in airplane mode. If the phone is turned off it will last a long, long time.
Also, be aware the freezing temperature can kill your battery. Mamy hikers that I know will sleep with the phone to keep it warm.

When I read with Kindle at night I turn the screen brightness almost all the way down. I just have to remember I did that because some times I think the phone is broken when the seems to be no display in the light of day.

Various smartphones/iPhones are definitely a neat all-in-1 tool for the outdoors, just make sure they are protected against massive rain, dust, etc.. with an appropriate pouch/cover. Do not put them in a cargo pocket as tripping, the combined force of bodyweight/packweight will likely damage it. The cell phone battery will last a long time, multiple days, when in airplane mode. There’s still a bit of power drain probably from getting out of the sleeping bag and cooking breakfast in the cold morning. I carry an Anker 10,000 mAh external battery on weeklong trips though my headlamp is rechargeable too. For winter which I’ll probably get back into, they’ve got insulated phone pouches too.

Do not put them in a cargo pocket as tripping, the combined force of bodyweight/packweight will likely damage it. Have this exact issue on my mind. Finally purchased a high-end phone for the low light camera capabilities (Pixel 6). Would like to protect it from accidents such as having a wind gust knock it off a tripod on top of a boulder, the inevitable slip from the hand, or taking a tumble. Didn't want a heavy case though. So far just a soft case + matte TPU protection film. Found that matte doesn't reduce glare that much so may buy tempered glass. Choosing between a hip or shoulder pocket pouch is another decision. Will likely still carry my Sony WX220 (still useful for 10X zoom in good light) and that's shoulder mounted. Hip pouches might be prone to subjecting the phone to damage if the pack hits the ground wrong. At the end of a tiring day, that may happen!

just make sure they are protected against massive rain My iPhone 12 can survive submerged in 19 feet of water for 30 minutes. I'm not thinking rain is the problem.

Let’s just say I have trust issues. I had to take a toothpick to my iPhone 12 lightning power inlet due to built up dust and grime, so I’m not trusting the marketing being so far from civilization. Maybe this winter though I’ll be looking at a 13 replacement in the future.

Maybe this winter though I’ll be looking at a 13 replacement in the future. Same time frame for me. ETA: I've taken underwater pictures with mine, keeping it in my hand. The key is to not plug anything into it, or try to charge it, until it completely dries out. I put it in a bag of rice, carefully so as to not get a grain into the lightning opening. Waited 3 hours.

So far just a soft case + matte TPU protection film. Glass screen protectors are by far better. TPU will eventually cloud at high use points and it transmits a point impact to the screen since it is basically soft. A hardened glass screen protector will crack from a bad point impact but that takes the energy away from your screen in the cracks. You might have to replace the glass protector but the screen underneath still will be good. One more plus is that glass protectors are much easier to apply with no dust underneath. The TPU gets static charged when you peel off the backing and attracts dust from pretty far away.
I like the SuperShieldz brand.

Thanks ErnieW! Was hoping a matte finish would significantly reduce glare but it doesn't. Couldn't find any matte glass ones for the P6. The TPU was a wet application. Decided I'd have to use another shoulder strap pouch for the phone. Hip belt is too curved for a reasonable size pouch to work for a phone.

The TPU was a wet application. I've never owned a water resistant phone before so a wet application never occurred to me until now.
