Wish I was doing more hiking, or at least had a solid plan in the works. Life gets in the way.
How about you?

I'm in training for a late March trip to the Canyon. It's been a while since I carried a pack for 8 straight days.

Not until next spring/summer. Winters it’s daytrips, skis, snowshoes mostly.

Starting January. Mostly hut-walking, though. In New Zealand.

I learned the other night that our troop has a backpacking trip planned in January. Depending on how my leg is feeling that weekend, I may go. It's only a one-nighter.

I'm thinking northern California This means different things to different people. People in San Francisco like to refer to themselves as "northern California" - so nobody thinks they're from LA I suppose. Anyway, we've got plenty of opinionated opinions about 4-6 day hikes when you decide where you want to be. Enjoy planning!

maybe I'll have something for ya in a month or two! Think about transportation and how much time you have. The north half of California is a really big place - you can't fly to San Francisco and Uber to the Lost Coast. When I think of great backpacking in Northern CA, the Trinity Alps come to mind first. Transportation up there is either difficult or expensive - I'd probably go with expensive and pay for a rent car to sit at the trailhead 4-6 days because it would make the trip easier and allow more time for fun. Lake Tahoe is much easier to get to and the Tahoe Rim Trail would be a great hike. The Desolation Wilderness is also a popular destination. Nothing in California beats the Sierra Nevada, and the northern half of Yosemite and Emigrant Wilderness north of that offer world-class, bucket list backpacking.

Thanks toejam, those are a lot of the same areas I'm hearing over and over. Trinity Alps just might be the place. This is a great forum! Thanks again.

7 weeks hence now have 12 days of Tahoe skiing plus a few San Francisco downtown city street "hiking" days. And most of my skiing is the direct fall line down mogul slopes thus a quite strenuous past time. Note another vertical 250 feet of bumps is above this photo from where we start skiing this run. Most times now at mid season I'll stop 1 to 3 times along the way. My lower back and legs are amazingly strong now and face tan is nice. Got back from skiing Wednesday evening and probably Monday sunrise will drive up the 200 miles to Tahoe for another 3 or 4 more days. Today Friday am going to drive the 55 miles up to The City for some more street fun.
As for winter backpacking or hiking advice here in California, should wait till mid February and then do Death Valley National Park or Anza Borrego State Park as greenery and wildflowers will be out by then. AB has plenty of trails while in DV there are vast areas to crosscountry out for one-nighters since one will need to carry water. Here in the SF Bay Area there are large numbers of parks and open space preserves. If I were not skiing would be doing some as there are several local meetup dot com hiking groups with a few group hikes every day of the week.
