Their website doesn't say anything but I overheard a clerk say it was closing in Dec & they are opening a store in CO?

they are opening a store in CO? I wonder where. There's already a store in Boulder.

Interesting. Montbell is an under rated manufacturer. Their gear is top notch; goes up against Patagonia any day. Same price point.
Never been to one of their stores, so no clue there.

There's already a store in Boulder. That's about the only viable market in CO. Maybe CO Springs, but don't think that would be a large enough market to open up a brick and mortar store.

Their website says the new store will be in downtown Denver and will open on 12/14. Seems strange that with so few stores they will have 2 only 30 miles apart. Maybe they are closing the store in Boulder instead.

I've been in the boulder store several times and it seems like nobody is ever shopping in there. It also seemed overly crowded with merchandise.
Maybe they had an opportunity to lease a larger space in Denver that would attract more customers?

Maybe they are closing the store in Boulder instead. That may make sense, but why downtown? Who wants to drive into downtown Denver? Seems like a poor marketing decision. bradmacmt ; agree Montbell is a slightly lower cost. The soft goods I have from them are first rate.

Who wants to drive into downtown Denver? Seems like a poor marketing decision. Maybe if it's walking distance from the flagship REI. But, yeah, I'd rather drive to Boulder.

But, yeah, I'd rather drive to Boulder. Seems there are plenty of locations along the I25 between Boulder and Denver that would be a better choice.

I have chased after the corporate "strategies" of both Mont-bell and Snowpeak numerous times in pursuit of some piece of gear I thought was interesting enough to acquire, but have come to the conclusion that whatever they're trying to do in the retail world outside of Japan is embedded in the inscrutable mind of someone remote - possibly sitting almost naked on the top of a picturesque peak in central Japan, who imagines that he is in direct contact with the mind of America.
Japanese concepts of "camping" and "backpacking" are more European than American, though there are good things to be said about both styles. I suspect that, in time, the American concept of what constitutes "camping" and "backpacking" will change to align more closely with these smaller, older areas - especially if we keep voting for the people we have in the last 50 years.
I recently (in the last year) bought a Snowpeak Geoshield stove, almost entirely out of curiosity. If you visit the websites of both these companies - the Japanese ones - you'll see a much more cosmopolitan, organized and social way of thinking about the world outside of the cities. It's not, BTW, "wilderness" by any stretch of the imagination.

That's because that's all they have... Yup. I think gabby has a point of sorts, but not from a political angle but more from the "glamping" craze mentality. People from more densely populated nations without the expanse of wilderness and public land we have here in North America and Russia have a different perspective than we do here. Personally, I find it interesting when I see posts here about European style backpacking that seem "smug" in the sense that the USA version of backpacking is somehow superior. Apples and oranges. Both taste good.

I wish montbell was in more stores. None of the dealers listed on there site near me carry it anymore. I found one store that has montbell. I would love to try on a few things before buying. Been looking at alpine light parka for a year or two. And I’m no where near boulder.

The alpine light parka is light and packs down to nothing. To me it really doesn't offer a lot of warmth and they have other jackets/parkas that offer more warmth with a slight weight penalty.
