I worry about nothing once I hit the road towards the TH. I live a pretty simple bachelor life with only a handful of waking hours at home. My apartment is more of a glorified gear locker than anything.
Or that's how it used to be. Now I have cats.

I don't do much of this, but my wife is famous for it. No sooner does she get in the car than she starts running through all the possible problems she might have left in place at home...from the coffee pot to watering plants.
It's become a joke now. We leave, and I stop the car ten minutes later and ask her what it is that she forgot to do.
BTW, none of the stuff is life-threatening...

I go through a certain amount of pre-trip anxiety. I clean out the fridge, in winter shut off the water, and winnow out the unnecessary gear in the pile. Once I'm out of the county, all is well and I don't worry about much at all. If my trip get's extended, I've got friends and neighbors that I can call to take care of things that might have required my attention.

I have a checklist of stuff that has to be done before we leave (cancel paper, turn off heat and water heater, etc.), and we do try to leave the house clean just to make it more pleasant when we come back. But once we're gone, no worries. I think I learned that in my childhood. When we'd leave for a trip, we could fret and fuss and even turn around...right up to when we got on the ferry. Once you were on the ferry headed to the mainland, anything you forgot...forget about it, there's no going back! I feel pretty much the same way about crossing the Bay, come to think of it. If we reach a bridge without remembering something, it's done and over. No going back. I do miss having the sort of neighbor who'd go close the garage door if we left it open, but that only ever happened once

Thanks for the replies everyone. Most of the chores on my list need to be done every week — whether I go hiking/backpacking or not. They are regular house-keeping and upkeep items. To that are added a few for my pickup truck like checking gas, oil, tire pressure, etc. And of course, because my backpack gets a lot of use, I have to replace items used the last week like pack food, water, winter or summer clothes, and so on.
It's convenient for me to do most of these chores on the day before I leave, but they generally need done or checked someday during the week — one way or another. So I have a routine house-cleaning day during which I combine packing and regular checks of pickup and so on.

The only thing I make sure of it that I have 1 pair of socks and a change of underwear in my dresser.

Yes. When I leave for a backpacking trip, I won't generally be home for a couple weeks. Dishes, laundry, refrigerator, etc. could be in a frightful state if not handled before leaving. That sometimes applies to the yard, too.

We usually clean up the kitchen, adjust the thermostat, and make our bed, but a 200 line checklist is well above my level of care.

Having a young adult at home, I just leave the list with her. We have done it enough that when we had to fly to Thailand on a day's notice, it wasn't a big production of leaving. "Here is the list. I will send you an update in a few days. Bye!"

I have been looking at this thread since I started here. I am still trying to process it. Even after reading all the posts, I am still not sure. I barely have a check list for the gear I pack.
Pre-hike chores? Is that like a quick run to WalMart for lithium batteries the day before the hike starts? Hummmmm.............

Pre-hike chores? Is that like a quick run to WalMart for lithium batteries the day before the hike starts? Hummmmm............. Well, considering that it's 150 miles to the nearest Walmart, how about you guess "no." Do you have a wife who stays home? If you do, ask her how many things she does during the week like laundry, cleaning lint filter, washing dishes, grocery shopping, vacuuming house, dusting. And if you are retired, do you do anything to help out at home like check oil, tire pressure, gas etc. on the vehicles? Carpentry work at home? Shop maintenance on the 6000 square foot shop you own? (That's me, not you.) As I've explained earlier, these are all the upkeep, maintenance, housekeeping, shopping chores of a full week. I choose to do them the day before I head for the trailhead. Many of them don't need done every week, and I can check them off quickly. But I take care of the things I own and I don't farm out duties to wife, kids, or contractors. That means regular maintenance on house, shop, vehicles, backpacks, and surrounding property. If you don't know what I'm talking about, think about it.
