I'm not a planner. I get the urge to go and I usually have a week or two to put together an itinerary. My go to has typically been the Porkies in the UP. Sadly, they have drastically restricted the ability to overnight, limiting it to 63 sites and requiring reservations, much to my spur-of-the-moment chagrin. I'm local to the Kettle Moraine State Forest, Southern and Northern Units, but all backpack shelters are booked there too. I don't mind off trail, backcountry camping where it's allowed, but I don't know where to start! I'm looking to get away 8/5-8/8. Any suggestions?

Pictured Rocks will likely have permits available.

Pictured Rocks can be dicey this time of year if the weather turns but if the forecast holds, I would go for it. The Trap Hills just east of the Porkies, near Bergland is another great option. the North Country Trail traverses them and there are great campsites on Hacksite Bluff and Norwich bluff.

Superior Hiking Trail (Duluth to Grand Marais MN) doesn't require permits. It may a bit cold there now..not sure.

Check out the Pine Marten Run Trail near Munising.
or Sylvania Wilderness.
