I had some shots I wanted to share so I thought I'd make a thread for them This is for those pictures of patterns and color in nature, shots that don't show a thing but rather, well, an abstract. I'll kick it off with these from the Presque-Ile River in Porcupine Mtn. State Wilderness, Michigan. The river was full of tannin, which seemed to make it foam a lot (as well as turning the water tea-colored). The foam reveals the currents and eddies, but it also looked to me at times like the outer spiral arms of the galaxy or something.

Very dramatic, and intriguing.

rebeccad, perfectly shaped leaves. I love the symmetry of nature.

GaliWalker , your peacock is magnificent! One of the local produce stores not very close to us has a small zoo (for lack of a better word), in front of the store. There are always ducks, usually geese and swans, but the peacock and if I recall correctly a few turkeys are permanent residents. It's so soothing to sit and watch these beauties of nature. I go to that store not to shop or buy, but to gaze and admire, especially something as beautiful (and mathematical) as a peacock in full spread.

I always try and keep an eye out for naturally occurring patterns; it's one of my favorite subjects to photograph. For those who don't know this, one of the things that draws out a pattern even more is something that is not a part of it. e.g. In my photo it would be the peacock's body, which paradoxically makes the viewer 'see' the pattern in the feathers that much more. Or at least, that's how it's supposed to work.

GaliWalker , ah, more insights from the Master! The body was exactly what for me was an enhancement of the patterns of the circles. The llnearity and strong blue of the body contrasts but also highlights the patterns in the circular and also linear fan. And it also connects them with the lesser quantity of blue in the fan. It's a stunning combination.
And thanks for sharing your insights and observations.
And, BTW, the patterns are for me what makes brachiopods so special.

I don't know about what it was though it looked like pollen. That isn't a macro photo, rather that swirl was 100 to 200 yards in diameter on the northeast (if I remember right) side of Crater Lake.

Almost certainly pine pollen. I've seen it there, and elsewhere, in mind-blowing quantities. In that case, it's probably revealing the wind patterns, rather than eddies in the water.

GaliWalker , another beauty. Dark trees contrasted and lightened by soft frothy colored leaves, literally growing in a horizontal pattern. And 2 trees on the left are "hugging trunks." Absolutely stunning.
