Hello, I'm looking for some good hiking trails that also have secluded backcountry / primitive camping spots. I am looking specifically in Southern Michigan, because I live in Indianapolis and would like to keep my drive under 5 hours. Does anyone have suggestions?

It's been years since I looked at hiking trails in southern Michigan. There may be some that offer secluded/primitive backcountry camping, but I can't recall any offhand. If you are willing to go to mid-Michigan, I recommend the North Country Trail through the Manistee National Forest. I found it to be an enjoyable stretch of trail, you can camp pretty much anywhere, and you're not likely to encounter many people on the trail. Check out the NCTA website. Click on the "Launch the Online Map" box. You can see the route of the NCT through Michigan. Note where it enters the Manistee National Forest in mid-Michigan near Newago. Here are the dispersed camping rules for the Manistee National Forest. Edit: I just checked out Mapquest which says the drive from Indianapolis to Newago is 4 hrs 54 mins.

Going the opposite direction, have you checked out the Shawnee NF in southern IL?
How familiar are you with the opportunities in south Central and southern IN? You won't likely have total solitude, but there are some nice spots.

Not sure how far south it has to be, but I think seclusion could be found at Nordhouse Dunes near Ludington. I’d also look at southern sections of the North Country Trail in MI.
