Yep, same ones. Pro tip: Don't sit around a campfire too long wearing them. The chains heat up surprisingly fast and melt thru the rubber part.

Don't have to ever worry about that as I never build a campfire on my winter trips . . . or maybe once every 10 years, unless I'm burning my trash like a book or granola bar wrappers. Once in camp the spikes and boots are removed and I'm either in my crocs or down booties.

Another pro tip: building a large fire in deep snow will result in ice covered ground all around the fire. This ice is very slippery.

Even though I'm not a winter backpacker I found these tips kinda interesting. It's not something I would have thought about IF i had benn on my 1st winter hike. Something to tuck away and file in my small brain for later use.

Campfires are WAY OVERRATED on winter backpacking trips in my opinion. Where is the warmest place when it's -10F on a mountaintop in North Carolina? Sitting inside my tent atop my 7R sleeping pad in my down parka and partially under my -15F down sleeping bag. No fire will keep me as warm and comfy---including my feet.
Plus, why risk getting ash holes in my nice $800 Hilleberg tent? Why risk getting ash holes in my down jacket?

I once saw some clueless idiot-ashholes on a 5,300 ridgetop in North Carolina in 15F temps during a 40-50mph windstorm standing around a big bonfire watching the fire move horizontally into the air with embers hitting their tents and clothing and gear because everything was blown sideways. Not to mention the dead leaves were dry and it was a fire hazard. Nervous Nelly is my name.

I've done several spring time trips to Henry W. Coe State Park (California, near the bay area), a really wonderful place in the spring, can you share some more information about this place, i am thinking about visit this place next spring , it so close to san francisco. how long did you stay there usually? what exactly time during spring? is there bugs during spring? thank you. Henry W. Coe State Park is in the Diablo Mtns East of Morgan Hill/Gilroy. I think that's roughly a 1/2 hour or so drive south from San Jose, not counting the 25 minute or so drive from the 101 up to the park. (I come up from So Cal. so I'm guessing a bit there.) Henry Coe SP is well supported by a dedicated non-profit group, who have an excellent website for the park: coepark.net/pineridgeassociation/In the spring, the bugs to be mainly concerned about are ticks. I always wear long pants with lightweight trail gaiters while hiking. I don't sleep in my hiking clothes and I try to inspect myself and my bedding for ticks before retiring. Spring weather there can be all over the place. I've hiked there in February one year during a heat wave with temps in the 80's, and I've had to cancel two trips during spring break (early April) due to severe thunderstorms. One year in March I had to delay starting from the Hunting Hollow entrance by a day due to Coyote Creek being too swollen from rain to cross, but the rest of the trip was phenomenal. I've done trips from 1-3 nights there. I'd like to do a longer trips sometime. The park is so large, one could easily hike for a week. My most recent trip was with my daughter. We spent two nights at Frog Lake and did a little day hiking. Photos here if you'd like to see them: og.smugmug.com/Hiking-Backpacking-and/Henry-W-Coe-SP-3-15/
