davesenesac the Piute Pass trail may be a bit "rearranged" after some flash flooding. I haven't been back up, yet, to check it out. I went over Piute Pass a couple of weeks ago and the trail was fine. Did seem like less stock droppings than other trails so it might have been impassible to stock for a while.

Yeah...I hiked that trail in the rain in July and there had been a downpour the night before. Flowers and plants were flattened and the trail was messy but fine. The creek water was almost up to the log crossing bridges. I "heard" that the next downpour that caused the rockslide on 168 did a number on the trail too.
I do see that David had hiked after that event with no noted comments on the trail conditions so it must've been in decent shape too.

johntpenca yes...going down the Tuolumne is just gorgeous...especially in early season flooding. I was jealous when my neighbor walked in from Tioga Pass last year at the peak runoff...June 20 2017. He could only get as far as Glen Aulin. (And he had no camera...!) I didn't hike to Glen Aulin until July 13 and it was still flooding. I can only imagine what my friend saw. It must've been awesome. (I did ride my bike in from the pass June 28 and walked downriver from Tuolumne Meadows a couple of miles. Beautiful!)

Almost more impressive to me than the drops were the slides like Waterwheel Falls, huge powerful displays that are well worth the effort of getting the timing right. And subject to side stream bridge blowouts and trail overflooding such as at the east end of Pate Valley where the cliffs pinch the trail to the riverside and at very high water I was wading upstream against the current..., the timing can get precise.

As for the Piute Pass trail...traveled on it yesterday. It is fine for travel, but, boy, has there been some rocks sliding and trail repair! (Since my July visit.) Damage that happened in April has also been worked on.
Plenty of mule poop too.

Boo to the mule poop!
A lot of good memories of Piute Pass, a wonderful introduction for me to the Sierra (and how to get badly sunburned in odd places as in that early June the Basin was still entirely snow covered with the lakes behind the pass largely ice covered.) camped by Muriel and wandered all over.

Those July storms were something. That was while we were out in eastern Sequoia, and the Shepherd Pass trail took some damage (though nothing we couldn’t pick our way over and around). Had us a little worried about the possible state of the road, but oddly enough there were no signs out there of the rain.
