Our next stop through northwest PA was this gem in the Allegheny National Forest, which protects an old growth forest. While the forest is smaller than Cook Forest, it is just as beautiful with more undergrowth. The beech trees had beautiful colors. The carpets of moss and all the mushrooms were also a highlight. The trees rise to over 160 feet tall. A great short hike that is perfect for kids. Hearts Content is near Hickory Creek Wilderness, and the scenic Tanbark Trail passes nearby.
