Even though it's associated with heavy duty gym workouts, I've also see Fb references on it from hiking - once from a hospital so not self diagnosed. abc13.com/amp/health/intense-workouts-may-have-deadly-result/3550207/ Reportedly the hospitalized hiker I followed for awhile was told tuna and rice over typical dehydrated fare. Any other tips on prevention?

Here is a summary of rhabdo research on wildland firefighters. Most cases are linked to pre- or early season physical fitness workouts or testing, but long distance hikers would be susceptible too. bit.ly/2016RhabdoCRI suspect one preventative measure is sufficient rest days after several hard days in a row. How many long distance or thru hikers actually schedule in a layover day?

When I hiked the PCT, I really needed that shower and laundry once a week though I never really developed hiker hunger.

It can creep up on you by using muscles you have never used before. I am so used to power lifting and hiking that I thought I could complete a crossfit workout without a problem. Hell, I lift more than most people there without breaking a sweat. The different movements crept up on me and I totally was winded and kidney wanted to give out by the end. I was told that this can happen on the hiking trail as well even if you are a veteran if you are not used to using the types of muscles needed for the trail. An example is, hiking in the mountains on an incline is not the same as hiking in soft sand, different muscles, and that can cause it. I was told to hydrate, and when in a new environment, workout, hike, etc... Take it easy.
