The authors obviously haven't spent a winter in Upstate NY and had their Vitamin D levels checked. Vitamin D is the only vitamin supplement I take. Last year, I had a full blood analysis for my first VA physical. The vitamin D level was so low that she had me take a 50,000 unit gel capsule once a week for 9 weeks. Then do a 1000 unit a day every day. The reason my vitamin D level was low, was that even though I live in the sunny desert, I cover up against the sun by wearing long sleeves and pants.

I take a Vitamin D supplement during the winter, and a low-dose multivitamin 2-3 times a week. I don't eat enough fish (the rest of my family dislikes it), so I should start taking a fish oil supplement.

My husband has a small supplement pharmacy going on, with many being very expensive. Most of what he takes has been proven to do nothing, but I can't tell him that. He's got the placebo effect going on.
I will take a multi occasionally. I do take B-12 or a B-complex regularly(usually if I'm hungover or stressed) I should probably take fish oil, but we eat a decent amount of fish. I spend a lot of time outside from about March-Oct, so I don't usually take Vitamin D. I will take it in the winter though when I remember.

Cripes, I subscribe to the Pure Vitamin Club. I take their Multi-Vitamin, B-12, Vitamin D (I was pretty excited when they released that) and Magnesium (they send me those every 90 days and automatically charge my CC). Not from the PVC, but I also take Iron and Potassium supplements on top of it all.
My D vitamins were tested low about 8 years ago, so I've been taking that every day since. My Iron was tested low about 4 years ago, so I have been taking that every day since. Everything else is just bonus and the Magnesium, Potassium and B-12 are to help with my cramping from not getting enough salt in my diet and working out.

Most of us are recommended to take some vitamin D, but I've also seen some studies that suggest that's overprescribed, too. Consumer Reports and the Berkeley Wellness Letter have both argued for some time that most people have no need of supplements, and if you are short of something it's a great deal more effective to get it through diet. If you live in the north or are as diligent as DD in covering up from the sun, you probably need D, but maybe not more than you get if you drink (fortified) milk. Mostly they are a big waste of money. Here is a better explanation of the study and what it means, in lay language. Did you mean to attach a link?
