Storytelling is, by defnition, the right place. As for dividing that area into regions? You miss the point! A title that mentions the location (use a full name, not SHR) is all you need. Can you add to a starter post? Absolutely! We now have edit permissions without a time limit. But consider breaking the story into sections and adding links to the first section to point to added Sections 2, 3, etc.

In the last (good) forums software I had a very well-read long trip report from my 2010 Baranof Island report in SE Alaska. I just posted the report segment-by-segment (on different days) into the same thread, about 10 posts total with intermittent user comments in between. That worked well, and didn't have to fragment up the whole report into a bunch of different threads. People could click through the thread and read the report in its full length.
Just food for thought. I don't think you have to overthink it though, just make a choice and go with it.
