I really don't like backpacking in the heat. I don't so much mind the heat of the day as the hot stuffy nights, miserable sleeping weather. I won't be doing anymore backpacking in Texas until some time in October. This time of year I turn to day hiking, fly fishing, and trail running. I had a nice10 mile hike at Colorado Bend State Park this past Friday, that ended with a nice soak in Spicewood Creek. A great way to spend a day when the weather is hot and miserable.

you guys got summer plans? i don't have any backpack trips on the calendar, but planning a trip out to Mt. Ranier in early August that i'm pretty excited about. we just got back from a successful first camp trip with my daughter (car camped at Fall Creek Falls). she was totally in to it, thankfully, though mom and dad could have done with a little less heat/humidity. we tested our new family tent:

that is North Face Talus 4, which seems pretty awesome so far. if one were much taller than 6-foot, this tent would be cramped when shared with four others. with just the three of us I was able to lay at a slight slant to alleviate. but there's tons of headroom (sitting up head room) and heavy on the features --built in gear loft, plus four other pockets; footprint and guy cord were included.
my ultrarunner buddy won the permit lottery for Ranier and asked me to run support for their attempt. they're gonna do the 90ish mile Wonderland loop in three days, while I shuffle camp around the mountain.

Lots of great waterfalls in middle Tenn. Two of my favorites: Burgess Falls - truly awesome, and an easy 1.5 mile out-and-back hike. Virgin Falls - perhaps my all time favorite, this 9 mile out-and back passes 3 other waterfalls. Virgin Falls pours out of a cave at the top of a cliff then plunges more than 100 feet into another cave/sink hole, in a very beautiful setting.

just going by photos I've seen, definitely. I've spent some time on the Olympic Coast, and a few nights in North Cascades NP, but this will be new territory for me.

Virgin Falls is one of my favorites, too. the campsite with a premo swimming hole is icing on the cake.
