Massive crack in earth mysteriously opens up in Bighorn Mountains
October 29, 2015 by David Strege “An engineer from Riverton, WY came out to shed a little light on this giant crack in the earth. Apparently, a wet spring lubricated across a cap rock. Then, a small spring on either side caused the bottom to slide out.”

I'm sure there's not, but.....I couldn't help but wonder if there was a large open pit coal mine just off the shot to the left.

I saw this yesterday, but it was limited to conspiracy theory sites (= USGS hiding imminent Yellowstone eruption), so I wasn't sure it was real. I see a few reputable sites are reporting it today. Very interesting... geology in action.

Upon viewing that image there is nothing more I want to do than traverse among and atop those remaining precariously precipitous earth columns. In person, it would be an incredible battle between reckless venturesomeness and sensible preservation.

...an incredible battle between reckless venturesomeness and sensible preservation. That's enough Kool-Aid for you, young man. Next thing we know you'll want to socialize the process, maximize the synergies, energize the methodology, or some other such nonsense. There be the path to ruin, my friend.

Read that earlier today. See a headline like that and I have to jump. So wonderful nature doing what is magic.

Fascinating and not very far away. Thanks for the link. We will be expecting a trip report from you soon Travis. It's on a private ranch, and I haven't had time yet today to pin down the location and owner. I hope I can at least do that and let you all look at Google Earth. No wait. . . this just happened. Okay, forget Google Earth. Actually RangeWalker may also have some information. He's a bit closer. Stay tuned.

It's funny that conspiracy theorists have seized on this. There are so many landslides out there, with many active areas. Much bigger ones than this aren't that hard to find. Good places to find them: Eastern Oregon, Columbia River Gorge (has that multi-fatality slide already faded from public memory?), Central and North Central AZ (remember the reroute near Page?), parts of Colorado.

Yep, there's been plenty of them around the West, including thousands of smaller ones over the years in Wyoming. This one is something of a novelty for the immediate area because of it's size but not all that unusual in greater context. And after reading a few other news articles, I think it is fairly obvious that the landowner does not want people out there looking for this "gash."

Conspiracy theories, natural phenomenon and metaphysical backpacking experiences are intriguing, but I keep hearing the song "My bucket has a hole in it".
