If you aren't using it because of the fat content, check out their Turkey Spam. The flavor is different than the pork product, but is good in it's own right. It still comes in the convenient size little can, and can be used cold or heated up. It is a good combination with fried eggs.

In my younger years, I ate plenty of SPAM. The U.S. Navy base on the island of Antigua, W.I. sometimes only had SPAM as a meat product. Like drinking powdered milk, eating SPAM was just a natural thing do; like mangoes, and lychee, and guavas, and papayas, which all grew in our yard.

A can of SPAM was one of my first camping meals along with the world-famous Dinty Moore Beef Stew! 12% of my planned lunch meals this season consist of a SPAM Slice. High on sodium will help retain water and mitigate dehydration. The 22 grams of fat is perfect compared to the 2 grams of carbohydrate. Toss in 11 grams of protein and good to go. Have been working with my trainer to actually train my body to consume fat first and carbs last. Fat burns clean and is easier to transform into energy, whilst carbs are harder to use and should be held in reserve. Though not a Super Spam Fan it is part of a well balanced backpacking menu and I am OK having a slice w/Guldens Mustard every 7-8 days.

Several scores of cans of SPAM, (and several scores of cans of a Canadian variation called KLIK (store ran out of SPAM)) are currently adding at least 100 pounds of ballast in my sailboat's lower storage lockers! :D

Some people are MUCH too fussy. Spam is high calorie, quick and easy to use, and priced to be affordable in any budget. I don't criticize people for eating Spam, but it is not a very nutritious food. For me there are just too many options that meet your criteria of "high calorie, quick and easy to use, and priced to be affordable in any budget", yet offer much better nutrition. The sodium load in a serving of Spam is crazy high. Spam singles have 250 calories and 200 of those calories are from fat. While we do need extra sodium and fat while backpacking, there are just way better options than Spam Singles. As an occasional sodium fat bomb, it's OK, though I have yet to find a real need to resort to buying any. While out on the trail, I have found that really nutritious food is just as valuable as the calories. I don't need to take supplements while backpacking if I eat a well balanced diet. I have almost eliminated the use of electrolyte supplements as well. I still take them just in case, but I use them sparingly. Rumi

I sometimes get a craving for it with eggs on a lazy Sunday morning. So I don't hate spam. But since I can't bring an egg with me backpacking..what are you eating it with? All Spam recipes welcome but would like a few lunch/easy ideas. Thanks!

Wouldn't need the seaweed, just soy sauce.

You can bring an egg. Even instant eggs for several days in. But fresh eggs the first day or two are easy to carry.

Eggs will keep just fine without refrigeration, provided you turn them over at least once a day to keep the shell membrane moist all over. They will keep months that way, without refrigeration.

Wouldn't need the seaweed, just soy sauce. Again, I'm Filipina, so Spam is something we eat, and Spam musubi is one of my favourite ways to eat it.

Not a fan of spam. Spam musubi can be good if done right and eaten fresh.

SPAM saved my butt on a wintry hike along the Canadian border on Minnesota's Border Route 10 years ago. Nothing like hot pork fat with some carbs to bring you back from hypothermia. I can't stand the stuff cold, but when heated in a pot of ramen it is a classic hot lunch on a cold day for me. I call it "Spamen":
