You should think about applesauce. I make my own, but you could buy whatever kind you like, and it is easy to dry. You then have applesauce leather. Put a hunk of it in a zip-lock, add water in the morning, and by lunch you have applesauce, virtually indistinguishable from how it started. There's your fruit, in a semi-liquid form, without the extra weight, and able to keep for the entire trip. I like your suggestion and will have to try it. How do you dry applesauce? I have one "fruit roll sheet" for my dehydrator. Do I spread the applesauce out on that? How thick?

I do use the sheet (it can help to spray with non-stick spray) or use parchment paper. Spread it fairly thin, but the important part is to make it uniform so it all dries in about the same time. I don't think you have to worry about being terribly precise. If you like chunky applesauce it works fine, just takes a little longer to dry, and probably to come back, but you'll end up with nice, chunky applesauce so it's worth it

I use parchment paper because the dried apple sauce can be fairly stick. With the paper I simply roll it up and it's mess free. Added bonus, you have a great firestarter with the paper when you finish eating the fruit leather.

Instead of applesauce, I'd suggest simply dehydrating apple chips. Just slice apples thin and sprinkle on a little lemon juice.
I mix my own Gatorade with 1/2 the salt.

Apple chips are also good, but I suggested applesauce because fresh fruit seemed to be one of the things that helped his appetite. I'm guessing part of that is because it's got lots of water in it.

I also will stir in a spoonful of either grape or strawberry jam into the applesauce before drying. You don't need much to flavor it. The leather comes out a little stickier but the variety in nice. P.S. I usually do jars of store bought. Just easier.

Seriously, my biggest problem is that after two or 3 days I am hungry ALL the time. I can't get there in less than four days. The real hunger doesn't kick in for me until most of my goals are ticked off and my mind is no longer consumed with calculating time/distance/water for the remaining decision tree. Most often, it kicks in a couple miles from the car and lasts for a week or two after I get back. This is me too. I can eat like a bird for most of the hike, but as soon as we start fantasizing about the giant cheeseburger waiting for us, it becomes an obsession.

Fresh fruit and fruit cups are close to calories I can drink. As someone else who loses my appetite while on the trail, I also usually take a few fruit cups (normally pear) with me. Yes, as daveg said they are heavy but I really look forward to eating/drinking them. If I'm out for a week or more I usually take enough for one every other day but if I'm out for only 3 or 4 days I'll take one for each day. Besides it's a fast way to lose weight out of your pack.

Dried strawberries (not in season now) also make for good snacking. Slice them about 1/4" thick and dry. A few pounds reduce to ounces.

NO, NO, NO!!! You need to use butter! Not in this case, I think. But we can start a food fight about it for old times' sake, if you'd like :D

I have a similar issue from time to time. Skipping food once usually helps. Have to force myself if it doesn't. :(

Seemingly, loss of appetite on the onset of extended hiking adventures is pretty much the norm for many of us here. Like many, those first 4 - 5 trail days, no appetite...no bowel movements either. After so many backpacking years, figured it out, long ago. I accept - this is just how my body reacts - my natural way. Now I listen to my body and plan for it. During that first (let's call it the acclimatization period), instead of pre-planning anything - heavy FB meals, pre-portioned packages, etc, (Power Bars) - (which won't/never go down), instead now opt for lots of liquids (which will). Beef jerky, dark chocolate Milky Ways, bouillon, dried fruit, (super sour Gummy Bears?), and pop tarts... This is what my body craves. I pack accordingly and have experienced no problems...seems to work. Why fight it?
