Hi Adirondacks experts, I will be making my first trip to the Adirondacks High Peaks region in 1.5 weeks (I'm staying in Lake Placid). I have my hikes planned, but am looking for photography locations, specifically for the following situation: - I'm looking for a lake with a mountain backdrop. - I'm looking for the late evening/sunset time frame. (I already have sunrise covered in my research). In my experience, the best site would be where the lake is south to southwest of the mountain, so that I can catch the late evening light falling on the mountain. - I'm not looking to do extensive hiking for this location (up to 5mi max, preferably <1mi or even beside a road), since I'll probably be tired from that day's hiking and will be looking to conserve energy for the next day's effort. For reference, my sunrise shooting locations are: - Connery Pond, with Whiteface Mountain as the backdrop. Here's a photo (not mine): - Chapel Pond (my backup if Connery Pond doesn't work out). - Elk Lake: This might work for both sunrise/sunset, but I've only picked this based on the map, and don't really know if Pinnacle (for sunrise) or Dix (for sunset) are visible from the lake, or make for good backdrops. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Looking at the map, Connery Pond, or even Lake Placid might work for sunset. Does anyone know if this is true...?

Sorry, but I can only offer negative advice. Access to Elk Lake is pretty limited by the Club that owns it. You'd better check to see if you can even photograph from the area you are thinking of. Hiker parking is limited to the small lot at the trailhead. When it is full, you must park more than a mile away from that. That said, Dix is one off the most striking peaks in the Daks.

Have you looked at Heart Lake? Very close to parking, with peaks all around. Not sure of the view, but Phelps is southwest...

How about Boreas Pond; ever been there? No, I have not. Walkswithblackflies is my go to for Adirondack questions. There is a facebook group called Aspiring 46ers that has great folks in it that might help with your questions too.

Gotcha. Thanks for all the help. For now, I've tentatively put Boreas Ponds as my arrival day's destination...at 7.2mi a little longer than I'd have liked, but flat, so hopefully won't tire me out for my Great Range loop hike the following day.

Maybe Flowed Lands from Upper Works trailhead, might be too much hiking. Or Henderson Lake. Owen or Copperas Ponds off of NY 86. First time in the High Peaks? You're in for a treat.

Photos not mine. Chapel Pond - Would work but there is a road on the other side... guardrails might ruin the photo. Cliffs/ very rugged terrain on west side of pond. Round Pond - Near Chapel Pond. Dedicated TH. Only about a 1 mile walk in (if that). Could work for both sunrise/sunset. Round Pond: Giant's Washbowl (on Giant Mtn, across Chapel Pond) - Uphill hike, but not bad. Set in a depression in the mountain. Might not have much, if any, sunset effects. Washbowl: Lake Placid - Could work, but access is limited. Possible shoot from the Village (maybe even Mirror Lake)... you'd need to verify. Rent a kayak/canoe and shoot from the boat or go to one of the islands and you might be golden. Connery Pond - There might be access issues. I tend to recall private property around the pond (not certain though) Upper/Lower Cascade Lakes - Right off the road. Road might ruin photo though. Lake might be too close to mountain for a good photo. Upper/Lower Ausable Lakes - Private Land issues, no easy way to get there. Lake might be too close to mountain for a good photo. Elk Lake - Private land issues. Otherwise a good option. Boreas Pond - Never been but looks like a good location. Boreas Pond: Lake Harris in Newcomb - Never been, but a possibility. Lake Harris: Upper/Middle/Lower Saranac Lake - Not sure about the extent of private land. Should be at least a few public options... or you could rent a canoe/kayak. Tupper Lake at Simon Pond (south of the Village) - Possibility at the bridge connecting the two, or a nearby marina. Tupper Lake: Flowed Lands/Lake Colden - One of my favorites. A great spot if you're willing to hike the distance (~10 mi RT, I believe). Flowed Lands:

Wow...very helpful! - Is that Round Pond photo around sunset...? If so, it looks perfect. - I've seen plenty of photos of Connery Pond at sunrise, which indicates to me that I might be fine as far as access goes. If not, I'll switch to Copperas Pond, as suggested by jmitch. Question: Do you know why I've never seen a good sunset photo from Connery Pond; does it not work well for that? - Flowed Lands looks great! I was planning to swing by Lake Colden on my way up Mt Colden (or Mt Marcy, haven't decided which one yet). I might extend the hike a little bit and also visit Flowed Lands. Thanks for the photo. Magnificent!

I was planning to swing by Lake Colden on my way up Mt Colden (or Mt Marcy, haven't decided which one yet). I might extend the hike a little bit and also visit Flowed Lands. Thanks for the photo. Magnificent! Flowed Lands makes a great overnight for a hike of Colden or Marcy.

Question: Do you know why I've never seen a good sunset photo from Connery Pond; does it not work well for that? Either private property, or the fact that it requires a bushwhack. I found this photo of Connery Pond at sunset:
