Ha ha--yes, there are one or two trees in Kansas. Hills, too. Seriously, it's creepy how similar the camps are, down to the topography, position of the creek in the background, etc. I don't think I took a picture from that angle, but I'll check.

Usually a 1/2 of a smaller blue foam REI used to sell (square). Been thinking of gluing a tougher, yet thinner layer of foam to it as to preserve it (not leaving chunks o'foam, etc..).

I often remain standing when I rest. But if it has been a tough uphill slog, perhaps a seat is in order. Then it's on anything available, in including the (wet, dirty) ground. I do not carry any specific sitting pad.

I prefer to sit on logs or rocks AFTER carefully inspecting for rattlesnakes. Snakes love to lay partially concealed against rocks or logs. I have also found ticks crawling on logs. I don't like to sit on wet or damp surfaces so will often use one of my recycled plastic grocery bags to sit on. Sitting on the ground is my last resort.

(wee dated) Squinting through EVF of A6000 on panoramic head across huge Duck Lake out of view to left, sitting on convenient trail side boulder, July 11, 2015 Duck Pass 11.2k. We sit down frequently on boulders and large logs more than on anything else per our leisurely style and I am not too picky.
More often hand carry tripod with camera versus stuffing it away inside pack and attaching tripod to pack. Current cheap foam knee pads smaller. Shown bunji'd to pack old photo daypack as now use a Talon 22. No t-shirt underneath that thin nylon shell mosquitoes cannot proboscis through. What's in that bulging pocket? A Ziplock bag full of all manner of sugary candy.
This one from last year 2016 stopped for rest on an embedded water smoothed Paleozoic boulder hiking along wash in Death Valley during Superbloom.

Sitting down. Always have a small sheet of plastic (grocery size bag) in case the sitting surface is wet. During the leafless season of in a treeless area I will usually find a downed tree trunk to sit on or a rock. Leaf season brings ticks so I find a spot not too long in wweed and grass to sit on on the plastic.

The pad on my pack (McHale), velcro's off for double duty as a sit pad. I haven't done that yet with mine, but I asked Dan if it was meant for that when I discovered how it was attached. I usually carry a little foam pad, but quite often I simply find a convenient rock, log, or patch of ground. I especially like a good section of slickrock, but I'll sit on gravel or even fist-sized cobbles if that's what's available. I prefer not to get wet, dusty, or dirty.

I've been thinking about this response for a while, and, since no one seems to have gone there, I will. (my apologies if you did and I missed it.)
"when, on what, and how do you sit down?" When I'm tired of standing. On what? On my butt. How? Carefully.

On a few day hikes and motorcycle camping, I carry my REI Flex Lite Chair, I love having a chair with a backrest that is angled nicely and that I can lean back and take everything in while sitting in comfort. Maybe I will change my mind since I haven't gone on a single backpacking trip yet but I loaded up all of my gear in my pack yesterday, after weighing most things individually, and with the chair at 1 lb 10 oz on my scale, my pack came in at 24.3 lbs. That was everything I would need for around 5 days minus food and water. I am sure that is heavy for a lot of people but heck, I am a fit, almost 49 year old, 6'3", 190 lb male.

That's a pretty good start. I totally agree. Some experience, a little tweeking of your gear, some future upgrades, and you could (if you want) have that down below 20. HYOK, not everyone needs or wants to be ultra-light. Glad you are ready to get out and get on the trail.

Don't want to take away from from the thread about where we sit but I do want to say thanks for the encouragement. First backpacking trip since I was a kid, just an overnighter nearby with a buddy, is during Memorial day weekend which needs to hurry up and get here!
