Most of you probably stay fit year round and maybe this won't apply to you, but I'm stoked. I found this company, Fit For Trips, that will tailor a training program specifically for a big trip that you have coming up. For someone like me, who frequently falls off the fitness wagon in favor of Netflix and Chicago deep dish, it's just what I need to kick into gear for summer backpacking! Fit for Trips LinkThey have 4, 8 and 12-week programs and lots of popular trips & outfitters on their site (i.e. Kilimanjaro, Everest Base Camp, etc.) that you can choose from, or a custom trip. You give them lots of personal health and medical information, including how many days and hours you can devote to working out, whether you work out at home or the gym, have a swimming pool, etc, and they prepare out a customized training program. At $30/week for the 12-week program, it's definitely cheaper than my personal trainer who I was paying $80/hour and could only afford to see once a week. I got mine today* - I'm doing the 12-week program to prep for the Haute Route in Switzerland this August. They did a great job of incorporating swimming (which is my current cardio), resistance training, stairs, treadmill and regular old hiking with increasing pack weight over the 12 weeks. I'm excited to get started - I'm super Type-A and having a schedule is going to help me tremendously. Leigh's Alpenwild "Haute Route"Endurance Program 2.0
This program is designed to get you ready for multi-day hiking that includes ascending and descending often. Additionally, your body will be prepared for the rigors of uneven terrain. This type of training will help you tolerate the discomfort associated with higher altitudes as well.

Looks interesting, and I will await your final report. Being retired, I have all kinds of time to devote to staying in shape year round. Biking, hiking, and paddling are my interests, and one or the other will keep me busy most days here in Fl. I can see where this would've been of greater help while I was working in Oregon.

I'm looking forward to an extended leave from cubicle-world where I have the opportunity to hike every day! I'm most interested to see what my natural sleep pattern will be - I've never been a morning person so we'll see what happens when I no longer have to set an alarm clock! Until then...hoping this program will get me ready for all that hiking

I am one of Those. Morning people who wake up with the first light, and need no caffeine. Cheerful bloke, too. Talkative right off in the AM. Too much for some to endure.
PS- It took me nearly 6 weeks to adjust to getting up on my own. Work days had me setting a 4:30 alarm. Not much light at that hour, except for June 25th.

I hope it works for you. I also hope you can keep it going after reaching your target level. One of life's hard truths is that it's a lot easier to stay in shape than to get in shape.

I've never been a morning person so we'll see what happens when I no longer have to set an alarm clock! I'm wondering about this for the long term. I was always a morning person, but now when I have a week when I don't have to get up at any particular time, I find myself staying up later and sleeping until 7:30 or 8. Or even 9, some days. I do love my morning java, but it didn't used to be necessary to get me to speak civilly to people. As for staying/getting in shape, we always try to have some goal in hand so we stay in shape but are also pushing and building to something more. Right now it's a Century ride on our bikes, and then we'll shift to training for hiking, building up to carrying loads, etc. Through it all, I keep swimming a couple of days a week. Used to be all running, all the time, but both of our bodies seem to have sent in notice that that isn't a viable option anymore.

I use to do the last minute get in shape for backpacking season and use the first few backpacks to round things off. Now I work out all year long so that it does not take as long to be ready for the week long trips and pack loads. For the 2017 season I am looking at 3 trips of more than 5 days, one trip of 5 days, and a bunch of weekend warrior trips. Staying ready for backpacking opens the door for more backpacking cowbell.

I'm doing the 12-week program to prep for the Haute Route in Switzerland this August. That sounds like a wise choice. I think 4 weeks probably isn't enough time to ramp up to a level where you'd see much improvement.

Thanks for sharing this. I've been interested in setting up a "formal" program for my Kalalau trip using the tools I already own and this just may be the ticket.
As for getting up before dawn, serving in the Navy instilled in me some kind of internal alarm clock. I am always awake by 4:30 or 5:00 and haven't used an alarm clock since 1990. Haven't wore a wrist watch since 1995 (that has more to do with farming and Aloha spirit mentality than anything else!).

I definitely need all twelve

Today I begin my 12 week program for my trip to Hawaii in the fall. Although it is more than 12 weeks away, Marcus has set up the program in a way for me to still "peak" at the right time. I've got over 80 miles of hiking planned for our trip this year. Very excited I am!!

I fell a bit off schedule with so much travel in the last month, but luckily, I had two extra weeks built in, so I've used up all my slack, lol! I have 5 days scheduled, with two rest days, which is pretty manageable. Monday - Swim + Resistance Training Tuesday - Stairs Wednesday - Treadmill - this is the worst part - 5 miles at 15% incline. Fortunately, my gym has good cable, so I have been trying to find a good movie to get me through this slog Friday - Resistance Training Saturday - Hiking (varying lengths and pack weights) I put more info on my blog, including some screen shots of the signup process, if anyone is interested. www.campfiresandconcierges.com/fit-for-trips/
