I am among the ranks of those who've 'custom-built' sternum straps for packs found lacking. I use it quite often. On the big pack, it also helps keep the camera from wibbly-wobbling all over when hung from the shoulder strap.

I sometimes wear binoculars by the neck strap if I want them handy in ruins territory, but they tend to swing all over the place. Fastening the sternum strap over the binoculars strap keeps that in check.

I've down-sized to 8x25, trying to reduce my base-weight, but I refuse to leave them behind. The sternum strap is perfect for stabilizing them while keeping them close at hand.

Usually on day packs but not necessarily on backpacks. My current day pack has a sternum strap and on older ones I would loosen the shoulder straps and connect with a carabiner to stabilize the pack.On my ultralight daypack/backpack I also connected the straps in similar fashion while cycling but not necessarily for backpacking. On my packs I am always varying the straps to vary/fine tune the stress so am more likely to keep the sternum strap unfastened on a well framed backpack...
