Chuck the Mauler Side note: there is plenty of camping outside the park yet still just off the Crest Trail. ... 3. There are tons of other camp locations not listed on the map kcwins et al you sound like experts on this, so I thought I'd pick your brain. I'm hiking the TCT, with a permit for staying at Granite Canyon -> Death Canyon -> North Fork Cascade -> Holly Lake -> North fork Cascade -> String Lake trailhead. However I'm a little worried about the Death Canyon -> North Fork Cascade day, as that's over 15 miles. Where are these campgrounds you mentioned outside the park / not on the map? Also before starting the hike at granite canyon trailhead, I want to camp somewhere close to the trailhead (outside the park). Do you know of any primitive campsites in that area / places where it's legal to camp? I'm planning to drop the car up at Jenny Lodge to pick up my permit and somehow(?) shuttle back to Granite Canyon trailhead. Thank you so much!

I would see about having the permit altered when you get to the Jenny Lake ranger station the day before your trip. There is no reason to drop down from Fox Creek Pass to camp in Death Canyon. Then to turn around and go back up the pass the next morning. I would see if you could get night 2 changed to the Alaska Basin (which is outside the park and technically you don't need a park permit for). That would make the hike to the North Fork a nice manageable and leisurely day once you head down from Hurricane Pass. If not, see if they can switch it the the Death Canyon Shelf and get as close to Mount Meek Pass as you can. And if that doesn't work, once you get to Fox Creek pass, rather than drop down in to Death Canyon, hang a left and stay just outside the park in the jedediah smith wilderness area. It's literally right there. The only issue with that is from there to the North Fork would be a long day.....but do-able, and a REALLY short day 2.
As far as camping outside the park, I know a few places, but I'll defer to absarokanut.

I'm think of spending two nights in the South Fork Cascade camp zone in order to do more landscape photography. Do the hike up to see Icefloe lake and Snowdrift lake. Maybe get a sunset from Table Mountain.
Any better ideas as far as from a photography standpoint?
Curent itinerary would be;
Night One- Just beyond Marion Lake to watch the sunset on the Cathedral group. Night Two- Alaskan Basin Night Three- South Cascade Basin near the junction to Icefloe Lake Night Four- South Cascade Basin either same camp or closer to Table Mountain ? Night Five- Upper Cascade Basin at either Lake Solitude or Mica Night Six- Holly Lake or Lower Paintbrush Camp area
Does that seem like a "leisurely" pace for green horn?

There's no camping at Lake Multitude and at Mica unless you get a dispersed permit.
Avalanche Divide is cool. The Upper Southfork of Cascade CANYON and Avalanche Divide close together.
Good Luck getting the outside the park site just past Marion, Backpacker published it not long ago. Death Canyon Shelf?
If you're hauling much camera gear Hurricane to Table MT. could be a beotch.
Did you get dispersed walk up permits?

Did you get dispersed walk up permits? No, I have no idea what that is. I was figuring on getting my sights chosen with nearby options and going from there with the park ranger or permit person at Jenny Lake. I was planning on tackling table mountain with just a day pack if the time allowed. What is the dispersed walk permit?

You won't be able to camp at Lake Solitude. However there is a site up at Mica I have stayed at before. Room for 1 tent only as I recall (which is the dispersed permit absarokanut is referring to). The easiest way to get there is to hike to the bench where Lake Solitude is, then turn and head east southeast up the scree field toward mica.
From the AB to the South Fork Cascade Canyon then up the Avalanche Divide would be no problem to do in a day. I've not been to Iceflow Lake, but I have hiked out past Kit, Snowdrift and Taminah down Avalanche Canyon. One of my favorite in the park. From Sunset lake there is an old game trail that will take you directly to Avalanche Canyon if you're game for an off trail adventure. If memory serves me right getting down was a bit of a chore.
From Kit or Snowdrfit Lake back to Table Mountain is doable. I would set up camp in the South Fork and day hike up towards Table. Camping there (outside the park near Table) could be tough.
If you decide to camp outside the park past Marion the 1st night, load up with water and plan to be exposed. But it's awesome up there.
The added side trips to Mica, Ice Flow and or Snowdrift and Table Mtn. take this trip from leisure to a bit of work.....but worth the effort!

I suppose we'll camp somewhere in the upper cascade in order to get a jump on the paint brush pass that day. That's my only concern about tired legs on the 4th or 5th day.
I just found out the Jenny Lake station will be closed when we get there so we'll get our itinerary worked out at the Moose station.
How are past Marion Lake should I expect to hike before finding a place to set up camp? My goal there would be to get a good photo of the cathedral group with a sunset.
Again, thank you guys for all your help!

You'll have a 300' bump coming up out of Marion Lake. Then you're wide open. You'll have views right away. Pick a place.
As far as the North Fork Cascade Canyon goes. camp as high in the zone as possible (closest to Lake Solitude). The last site in the zone is the best one and is on your right (north side of the trail). The one before that (there are 2 there) is on the left (south side of the trail) near the drainage from Mica. Anything before that will be fine, but the higher you get in the zone, the better the views. Wanna talk about sunset picture opportunities of the Grand!! That of course if you opt out of Mica.
