BACK FROM THE TRIP!
Amazing time, though the trails around Grassy Cove Top were pretty damn tough to follow. With a compass we got through it, but I got a sense that not a lot of people hike from Greasy Cove trail to Art Loeb... that connector trail was a very narrow footpath.
We camped up there at Grassy Cove Top, which weren't too far from bear tracks (saw PLENTY of tracks out there...). I heard animals all around us near our camp at night... and at 1:30AM I heard a set of heavy-hitting footsteps running by our tent. I woke up roaring for whatever-it-was to go away, and heard the footsteps fade away from the tent. I really have a hunch that it was a black bear, but I have no way of proving it.
What wildlife is out at Shining Rock? We also heard what sounded like a deer... hopping away after I made a bit of noise.
Amazing trip, but quite the spooky night... if I went back I probably wouldn't camp up top where it was so isolate.
