Oh, my. Those are bad jokes in that thread. ErnieW Did your wife ignore the "No girls allowed!" sign on your fort? absarokanaut - Sadly, I've only done a couple of bikepacking trips near Denver. Still working out my gear, and trying to get into decent biking shape with a load, which might include the bike itself on my back. driftwoody - I love Chicago. Been there a bunch of times, both for business and family gatherings, but never got to hike.

dustin, the forest preserves southwest of Chicago offer some decent hiking, which I mostly do in the winter. Also historical significance at Red Gate Woods, where the world's first nuclear reactor (from Stagg Field, U of C) is buried. Shawnee National Forest in Southern Illinois dodged the glaciers, and has some great hiking. Did you know Illinois has its own Garden of the Gods?

Welcome from Seattle. I compromise about the food—I make It myself, but do all the cooking at home and just add water in camp.

I just forget what to add... Chimichurri - only had it a couple of times. loved IIRC

Welcome, Dustin, from central Texas. I'm an extremely lazy dehydrated meal guy myself, but I admire those who are industrious enough to cook in the back country. I do have a 10" GSI Pinnacle Frypan that I've used once or twice, and it has worked very well, heating evenly enough when paired with a Pocket Rocket Deluxe to cook hashbrowns without any sticking. Do you have a specific concern with aluminum? I think hard-anodized aluminum is generally considered a better material for cookware than titanium, which is lighter but doesn't distribute heat well, and doesn't have great no-stick properties. sarbar is on this forum from time to time, she is a great resource for backcountry food.

I actually love cooking in the back country but I absolutely hate cleaning up. My Toaks Ti pot has only been touched by water and coffee so far. I just give it a shake and put it away.

Didn't she literally write the book? She has a freeze drier. I'm jealous She freeze-dries chickens. Live chickens. It's quite genius, actually. 40-50 year shelf life. Fresh eggs & nuggets any time she needs, even in nuclear winter.
