To Hale and Back...the Long Way! Over fifty (50) years ago, my dear friend, Kevin Leonard, took me on a hike up Mount Hale (4,054'). Mount Hale is one of 48 4,000-foot peaks in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. The view of the Pemigewasset (The Pemi) was captivating and a life changing moment for me. After the summit, we descended Lend-a-Hand Trail to a junction, where I took my very first step on the AT. In memory of Kevin, my 2,194 mi. hike of the AT began and finished at the junction. First light on North Moose Mountain (2,281'). Looking back at Smarts Mountain (3,226'). Learned a new hiker acronym...PUD (Pointless Ups and Downs)From Hanover, NH to the summit of Moosilauke (4,795'), the AT is maintained by the Dartmouth Outing Club (DOC).Experienced extreme emotion (goosebumps) here in the krummholz approaching alpine zone. It was like... I was home!
Clouds and mist are common in the Whites. Above tree line, trails are marked by large cairns.Complimentary Yankee fan photo - Magic Falcon from Queens, NYC, USAThese AT thru-hikers have hiked 1,800 miles from Georgia. They are stunned by their first view of the Whites.
