It was high is some places, but easy to walk through, unlike the shoulder high gorse. We walked around some, through some.

I found the bracken easy to push through too. You have to be aware of tics as they are there, though very few carry Lyme disease. I pitched in bracken a few nights but didn't pick up any at all. Was wary of adders (UK's only poisonous snake) as the only couple of times I spotted one was in areas of bracken in Scotland. Gorse would be well avoided!

zeke, the best description I can think of the landscapes is "hauntingly beautiful and stunning". There's so much of a blend of peace, solitude yet also dynamic scenes. Curious: on day 5, two photos especially caught my eye: 1. Second photo: an apparent brick/rock circle, somewhat subsided. Was this a home at one time? 2. Fifth photo: I'm speechless. It's so stunning ...two majestic rock guardians. Thanks so much for sharing.

autumnmist Yes, that circle I was standing next to was a home at one time, probably dating back into the Iron Age. It is part of the Nybster broch. linkThe last photo of the Stacks at Duncansby don't really do them justice. linkVideos of my best shots.

Pause at any point and note the lighthouse on top of the cliffs, for scale.

That reminds of the lighthouse we had lunch at on Skye.

I'm supremely jealous of all of you who've had the chance to walk those paths. I read John Hillaby's Journey Through Britain back in the 70s after finding it on a shelf in the UT Coop store, and recently read about John Probert's reproduction of that trip on a motorcycle ( If Only I Had More Time. A Motorcycle Journey Through Britain with Mark Probert), but the likelihood of my ever getting a chance to do anything similar to zeke's trip recedes, year-by-year, further and further into the realm of "things I should have done much earlier". I congratulate you, zeke, on any part of the trip you completed. I like to walk, but I seem to spend more time dreaming. :^)

Beautiful pics - sorry you couldn't hike the way you'd like because of the knee. I'm headed to Scotland myself in a month or so, and as much as I'd love to get to the North Coast, I'm going to rely on public transportation only and don't think I can fit it in. Too much to see, too little time. I will be spending nights in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, and Inverness so I know I'll get to see some beautiful places. No hiking for me -- working on lower back therapy just to get walking again. Maybe one day ...

Cell phone photos never really do justice to the landscape, but here’s another perspective on the Duncansby Stacks.

After a month of rest, today was a leg day back at the gym. No pain, but a clicking feeling / noise from the knee. I'll watch it as I continue working it. No issues walking, or climbing stairs, just the leg extensions with weights.
