...I guess the short point is, if you haven’t already, visit a podiatrist and see what s/he says about orthotics and their ability to help you. Well, I have a trip planned for a podiatrist, but it's the day after I get done with my hike. I've been looking at some of the inserts from Amazon, but they're mighty expensive and I wanted to know if those worked for anyone here or not. Or if anyone has any home remedies. Mine were about $400 20 years ago. But as far as lasting, 20 years strong isn’t too bad and the $ per year quite the deal vs those I bought retail. If you need something retail in the meantime I’d suggest something with a stiff support like superfeet.

You've got to remember that there isn't much down here.

Well, I got checked out today. The official ruling is that I don't actually have flat feet, which goes against everything every doctor has told me my entire life. I do have arches. I just can't support them, and also I have an aversion. However, the insoles are still a go. Also, my right leg is 3/8" shorter than the left. My hiking trip has been moved a couple weeks or so ahead, due to some sickness in the family.

Also, my right leg is 3/8" shorter than the left. That can lead to problems almost anywhere, especially in your hips and back.

I just can't support them, and also I have an aversion. It's really a terminology issue. Eversion is the medical term for what are more colloquially called flat feet. Few people's feet are completely flat, but the arch has lost some structural integrity (your ability to support). I would say that in practice, your condition is what you had always been told, it's just being described with more technical precision.

Either way, I'm glad about the diagnosis. It means that they'll be fixing up my foot. And since my hiking trip has been moved, my insole will get here before then.

Good news on getting the inserts in time for your hike. Hopefully they do the trick. Will you be trying a heel lift for your short leg too? I tried a lift but it put my heel too high and I couldn't secure my foot in my shoes. Also tried modifying some shoes but that was hit and miss (lots of $$ and only one of three held up to any use) and I finally gave up, and just go about with the short leg. Which doesn't seem to bother me much, it was getting my arches properly supported that really fixed things.

I've had flat feet my entire life. Growing up in the 70s, our local shoe store professional/salesman said I had "Indian feet".... flat and wide. The difference between us, is I've never had an issue my flat feet, other than I don't like to stand in one place for an extended time. I walk barefoot a lot... both trails and roads. When not barefoot, loafers are my go-to shoe. I prefer zero drop shoes while trail running,
