I’m reviving this old thread because I want to replace the very cheap and heavy bike I originally bought to haul groceries. I’d like to get a gravel bike that will haul groceries, but also be reasonable for doing a bit of riding on FS roads, with some thought of bikepacking. I’m coming to accept that I’m never going to be comfortable riding on highways and narrow but fast backroads again; I’m pretty much into quiet streets, bike paths, and 2-track. And that means I need a new bike. There’s no salvaging the mountain bike I have; it’s absurdly heavy. My road bike can’t carry loads or handle the rough stuff. So: recommendations?

As I've been considering this a little, link I had to decide what kind of riding I might do. This article helped. Narrow down the type of bikepacking, and the bike itself may be easier.
