The best laid plans ...
Have to be cancelled after I badly dislocated my left ankle at a senior softball tournament today. The doctor says one or both bones are fractured, and I may need surgery.
I was running full speed towards the rightfield foul line after a slicing fly ball and started putting on the brakes as the fence was coming up fast (I wear Altra Lone Peak 4 for softball). The field slopes down towards the sidelines, which may have affected the angle of my foot placement when the good traction of these shoes planted firmly and the rest of my leg continued forward, dislocating with the heel further back and the foot at an odd angle.
I had to be stretchered off the field and taken to a local ER where my foot was set. My team won that game, then two more to take the Eastern Nationals Championship in the 60 Major division.
But my season is over.

You have it the can though with all the research and planning. Anytime after July 4, 2021 it should be clear and open for you. You should let the team know what you sacrificed for them. Those Altra Lone Peaks are super clingy.

After I hit the ground I screamed in physical pain a couple times, then in mental anguish with the immediate knowledge that both softball and my much anticipated trip to Wyoming had just been canceled.
But I'm still looking forward to it.

You have it the can though with all the research and planning. Anytime after July 4, 2021 it should be clear and open for you. My plans are back on again, probably Sep 11-19. I'm trying to get a handle on the weather for that time of year and it seems quite mild for the nearby town of Sheridan (rarely if ever dipping below freezing) -- but I assume it gets bit colder at 9500 feet (my highest planned camp). At this point I'm not sure whether to bring my 32* or 20* sleeping bag, though I can easily bring both then check the forecast the day before heading upwards. Have you spent much time in the Cloud Peaks Wilderness in mid September?

Bring the 20º for sure. I've had it snow on me in Sept.,in Wy at less elevation than you will be at.

Third on the bag. I started seeing quite a few harebells recently, usually a harbinger of fall. You could have above freezing overnight temps or single digits like we had on Aug. 1 at the Headwaters of the Snake at Fox Park in the Teton Wilderness a few days after it cleared off after 10" of snow 45 years ago.

Not very familiar with flora in the western mountains, I momentarily though domestic cats were among the fauna when I misread "harebells "
I will bring both bags and carry the warmer bag if there is any chance of subfreezing.

[article] Have you spent much time in the Cloud Peaks Wilderness in mid September?
Sorry, it took a few days to see this.
Yes, and that time, the second and third week of September is possibly the best time to visit the Bighorns and Cloud Peak Wilderness. Yes, it is well discussed there is the chance of the first week of fall snows, some years. But there have been too many recent years of higher than average temps in September now. Do be prepared for frosty mornings so plan on protecting things like water filters and wet gear. And have good rain gear handy because cold showers can come in later September. Frosty tent flys are a norm most years. It is time for warmer bags or your usual three-season bag and a good liner if you are a colder sleeper.[my practice] It warms quickly in the mornings.
Powder River Pass WY weather and conditions This remote station is at '9600 feet just outside the southern boundary of the wilderness. In winter, I often go to Wyoming conditions cameras off US 16 at Meadow Lark Lake.
If I want real-time weather on the high places in the Bighorn NF and Cloud Peak Wilderness I look at Powder River Pass
My own experience, cold and snow in the higher elevation Bighorns versus absarokanaut's Western Mountains are though you can see the Absarokas from the Bighorns west slope on most days, our freaking cold and snow are couple weeks later in the calendar. ANd the Bighorns are open most of the way through October for hunters.
September 11-19 I should be at Pickle Gulch in the middle of that time. And hiking with someone in N Colorado.

Originally planned this trip for the week leading up to Labor Day but my hiking buddy was a no-go for that time slot, so I thought Sep 11-20 would be good.
Then I remembered my wife had bought tickets months ago to see Robert Cray on the 17th, so now the trip is planned for Sep 7-16. My hiking buddy can't leave before that Tuesday.
Hoping this plan actually becomes a reality.

scoey90, this thread might be of interest to you. I backpacked to Old Crowe for one night. It was nice, but not spectacular. Had to abandon my 3-nite plan for 7 brothers and Florence Pass because my hiking buddy became ill. Really enjoyed the day hikes.
