Though the furry mascots make me think of all the years when the boys carried stuffies with them (as well as little cars). Observe the furry heads poking out of the little backpacks. 2005. Ages 6 & 7.

And if you ever end up in Ontario's backcountry in June with those friends, you'll be the one laughing For sure! I do an early spring trip when trout season opens at the end of April/early May, before the black flies start, and then stay out of the backcountry until July. September and October are my favourite months for backpacking up here. I can't think of any "odd" items I take in (unless you count my Brother-in-Law) but definitely luxury items.

A small 2'x2' piece of foam for sitting upon and placing in front of the tent to kneel upon when exiting and entering. Whiskey

Isn't that one of the "Ten Essentials"?

Mine "odd thing" is a beer cap. This beer cap is my good luck charm that I got off my first beer that I had upon my return to the civilized world. It's now been in my pocket or on my person for almost a decade and I couldn't imagine not having it.

One of my great new pieces of "gear" is Knob Creek 120 Proof Bourbon . Not cheap, but for longer trips, taking a high proof whiskey that can be diluted makes a lot of sense, the alcohol equivalent of dehydrated food. And enjoying a fantastic bourbon like this in the back country is one of the finer pleasures in life.

I've been tempted many times to pack some bourbon, but have never actually done so. I guess I'm more of a gram weenie than I thought.
I really don't carry any odd or luxury items. When I go solo, I do always take a book.

My new piece of kit that I'll always try to take is a little bottle of cream that I use to relieve pain. I have one knuckle with arthritis that it really reduces the pain. Let me put it this way, the cream would be legal in Washington or Colorado, but its not legal in Idaho. It really helps when my knuckle feels like there is a nail being driven through it.

I carry about 7-10 lbs of photography gear. I often take photos of the night sky so I need a solid tripod, DSLR, and lens to get the shots I want. Lately I've been lightening all my other gear so my total pack weight still isn't very much.

You make me realize some might consider my little bottle of hand cream (just for dry skin, not like your stuff ) to be a luxury. My spouse doesn't carry any. He just borrows mine

I've done well as a newt. True. And you are a very handsome newt. Which may be an improvement? Come to think of it, I didn't ever see you before you were newted.

I have never taken any with me before, but due to events at Malheur I may start taking Pall Mall Menthol 100s, french vanilla creamer, and Miracle Whip.
