I'd like them better if they were all grounds. I didn't realize it was a mix. Still better than pure instant IMO My friend used to carry a french press with him and a bag of real grounds.. but it was glass and I think it eventually broke on him. It made great coffee though lol

I'm sure this has been said but, I use folgers single packets. They are just coffee grounds in tea bags. It's like instant coffee.. but real coffee. Well, sorta. They're an unholy mix of actual coffee grounds and instant. I'd like them better if they were all grounds. I've tried those. To me, they taste like weak instant.

I've used the Folger's coffee bags. I double them up for stronger coffee. They also have the packets now lie Via. I haven't tried them yet.

3/4 of a pound, and you still have to carry the grounds, in and out (and after use, they are wet and messy). That's why I think not.

At home I burr-grind my own coffee and brew in a Technivorm Moccamaster. Said that to say I'm a bit of a coffee nut... and I think VIA is a bit gross. Of all the instant coffee's I've tried, including Medaglia D'Oro and Mount Hagen, I've found plain old Yuban the best.
But, if you want a really good cup of coffee just use a Jetboil with the 1oz French Press accessory.

As far as instant goes (which isn't very far), I like Via best, followed by Trader Joe's instant (which has the advantage of being in bulk). But I'm wondering if a 10-day trip is enough to make me need to switch to tea

I’ve been making my own coffee bags. I buy the empty loose leaf tea bags and just put in some GOOD coffee. It’s like using the Folgers coffee bags but with REAL coffee taste. Way better that Via with very little fuss on the trail.

Rebecca, do you own, or have you used a Jetboil with French Press?

Rebecca, do you own, or have you used a Jetboil with French Press? No. I'm cooking for 2-4, though making coffee only for one, so the Jetboil has never seemed adequate. I use a WB stove with a 1.5L pot, and have at times used a pour-through filter, but got tired of a) cool coffee and b) dealing with the grounds. Putting up with bad coffee is part of lightening the load--I use a really minimalist light plastic cup. The exception is when we take a friend who also drinks coffee, in which case (assuming we'll be over 8000', which we usually are), I'll take my 2-cup aluminum percolator. I don't find tea very satisfying either. But at some point it's better than another cup of bad coffee :-p

But I'm wondering if a 10-day trip is enough to make me need to switch to tea There is nothing that would bring me to that point. That being said, Putting up with bad coffee is part of lightening the load Via is drinkable and for a temporary situation, I can deal. I do appreciate a good latte when I finish a hike, however.

With our way of a breakfast being a no cook meal, we have settled on SToK as our, on trail, coffee thing.

I am a bit of a coffee snob as some like to say, I prefer purveyor. I obviously take my time and brew excellent coffee at home but on the trail I will settle for the convince and weight savings of instant coffee. I have found that Alpine Start is actually pretty decent for instant coffee. There are much better brands out there but the cost for those gets pretty high. Check out these brands: www.suddencoffee.comswiftcupcoffee.comvoila.coffee
