Sailing classes will also tell you if you are going to spend the whole time puking over the rail, which might make the cruise a little less pleasant :D HaHa! Not me, been on enough boats to know I can grow sea legs.

Still a bit of a haze and little wind. But a beautiful day on the water.

rebeccad , I love the comments you interject! And, yes, I want to hear more too! daveg , where was the photo taken of the waterlogged dock on the Lake Huron shore? Eastern Michigan or Western Canada? You mentioned earlier that your boat could handle any of the Great Lakes. Have you ever sailed on Lake Superior? My understanding is that in November it can be quite treacherous once the storms come.

autumnmist The waterlogged docks are at Harrisville Harbor (east coast of Michigan) which is where we stayed last night. They put in new floating docks last year so most of the dockage is fine. The waterlogged docks are a few of the older docks they didn't replace. I've sailed all the Great Lakes except Superior. I would like to do it sometime, but in midsummer. Most recreational boats are pulled by the end of October. I've only been sailing in November once and that was early November on Lake Michigan. No way would I venture out on Superior in November.

Well, I like to visit amazing places, and yes, I take photos. Most of which I share with... no one. And the only selfies I take are occasional “proof of life” shots for my bestie, who asks for them. Of course, in my basic arrogance (“I’m not one of THEM!”) I feel more like I’m the serious visitor who wants to truly experience the place and maybe take some great artistic photos (not “snapshots”). But that’s what we’d all say, isn’t it? Okay, I will say in my defence: no YouTube, no Instagram. And if you follow me on FB you know I don’t share much there, either.

Well, my husband and his brother were working on planning a trip to Patagonia for the 3 of us, and we realized that if we are ever to see Antarctica, this would be the time. We found a ship that only carries 100 passengers (the max allowed on shore at once), so we hope to maximize our time actually experiencing the place. But the smaller boat has one drawback: less stability. Which means more puking. I experienced a couple of hours of that on our NZ crossing between islands, and that was enough to tell me I will need strong drugs to survive the crossing from Tierra del Fuego to the Antarctic Peninsula. We leave for South America in February. I could wish I was doing something really worthwhile there, research and adding to our knowledge of the region, or fighting to keep the place safe. But no. I’m going to be a tourist in a place that’s getting too many tourists, probably, and will soon be irreparably changed. Am I conflicted about it? I’d have to be an idiot not to be. Am I going anyway? Damn skippy.

Hope you know it was in jest.... I did. But we have definitely had to think about what we are doing, though less about the photos than about the environmental impacts of our long road trips, and even more, long flights.

To johntpenca and anyone else: If you are ever in northern Michigan in the summer and want to go for a sail, let me know. Be glad to take you out. And if you want to go cruising, I move my boat from Bay City, MI to Traverse City, MI in late May and back again in September. It's about a 350 mile trip and usually takes one to two weeks depending on the weather and whether I treat it as a delivery or a cruise. If you want to experience a longer trip, I'm always looking for crew.,

Well, my husband and his brother were working on planning a trip to Patagonia Look up Yendegaia and Los Dientes de Navarino. They're 2 of my next 3 destinations down there. Both are on the Chilean side, whereas Ushuaia, the typical jumping off spot for Antarctica, is on the Argentine side.

My understanding is that in November it can be quite treacherous once the storms come. Exactly my thoughts. Gichigami, something, something.
