My father had a large shed filled with woodworking and other tools, including radial arm and hand saws, drill presses, drills, sanders, planers, something called an Eifel geared plier, wide range of bar clamps, (including some about 6' long), half a dozen vises, plus some hand made tools, and a lot of other equipment. I need to dispose of everything in his shed.
1. Auctions. I'm considering using an auction house. Craigs List and Facebook sales don't appeal to me; I've already had a few run-ins with peculiar if not untrustworthy people. And I do NOT want to have the kind of people I've already met coming out to a vacant house.
Does anyone know of good, reliable national auction houses for shop tools? Any ideas also on what percentages they take? One friend whose wife hired an auction house for her father's general property only got about 1% of the proceeds. For that, I'm not sure it's worth the effort.
I also need someone who's familiar with woodworking; a regular auction house that also auctions towels and household goods isn't what I need. I understand thatsomeone would probably come out, assess the tool value, and take them to their shop, where they're either auctioned on line, or some other method of disposal is used. That might be safer than having a lot of people coming to Dad's shed.
2. Donations. I've also thought of giving them away; Vietnam Vets apparently takes them, so that might a source. I've thought of woodworking clubs, and possibly programs in trade schools, but there might be a liability issue since the tools have already been used.
Still, I think there's some value to the tools and I'd ike to get something for them.
Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks for any help you can offer.
