I knew this day would come........ But you know what? The kids love it. I love it. And we are at least going places. It isn't backpacking, but it's nights out looking at the stars.

I'm about 8 years from that when I retire. Won't be an RV, though. I'll modify a Toyota 4Runner and live the nomad/vagabond lifestyle.

It's a petite class A on a Ford 450. It's what is deemed an RUV now. It handles like an ambulance. Lol. We are putting in a different suspension though, and with the new battery array that is coming, we can fully dry camp (yes, got the solar array already going). Our neighbors at our previous house live full time RV in a giant Class A, they took us through RV 101 this past weekend which taught us more than we thought we needed to know (and will make us so much safer I hope now!)

If it's any consolation, your back will thank you for giving it a softer place to rest.

That does make you old, but at least your life doesn't revolve around a golf cart yet.

That does make you old, but at least your life doesn't revolve around a golf cart yet. Heh. My mother-in-law is visiting for a few weeks: we actually rented one so we could get her out of the house and putz around the area in the evening. We live in a small rural "community" on a lake--they are very popular among the young and old in our neighborhood. The younger folks strap their beer coolers on to the back and "cruise."

That's very cool. It's a circle-of-life thing. Also, in my case, it may be a spouse thing. She still enjoys the occasional car camp, but has never been a backpacker (much), and her enthusiasm for sleeping on the ground is clearly on the downslope. I suspect we may have one of those small teardrop trailers or the like at some point. She'll retire younger than me: we're probably about 8 years away from that. I bet we'll own a small RV of some sort by then.
Part of the problem is that I car camp like a backpacker: bare minimal "stuff." If I can get set up (and my mind shifted) for a little more appropriately comfortable car camping experience with a tent, maybe she'd go for that.

My parents bought a 14' "travel trailer" (a camper) for their retirement travels. I used to absolutely detest anything related to campers, rvs, pop-ups etc.... But after seeing it do some pretty remote boondocking....I'm having a change of heart.

So we can just bring out food and go. That way also no unpacking!

We went this direction, and I'm absolutely in love with it. It's small, can go virtually anywhere (it sits on a dually F-350), and has a kitchen and bathroom. Love. It. (not only does it take us to gorgeous places to fly fish, hike with the dogs, and relax, but it's my race headquarters)

I have made sure the RV has its own gear. So we can just bring out food and go. That way also no unpacking! Absolutely. I'm working on assembling car camping gear that is completely independent from backpacking gear. I bought a queen-size REI air bed that is really very comfortable, for example. (Now I need a slightly larger tent to put it in, as the floor of the current car-camping tent of choice is completely filled up by the air bed.) But this would be one of the principle benefits of an RV, I think: that you could have all the gear, kitchen supplies, etc packed in the RV and ready to go: just add food and water.

It is still camping.
...with a shower, microwave, refrigerator, sat TV, and a real bed.
I used to dismiss RVs as not real camping, until I got one. Now I am spoiled. I haul all my toys with me. Spend one day mountain biking, the next paddling, then hike into a remote lake and fish all day. Repeat. Returning to my 'base camp' nightly. I can still do an overnight or two if I wish.
Plus I snowbird to Arizona every winter. Leave right after Christmas with the fam, and return when the white stuff starts disappearing.
