Having received my Real ID compliant drivers license. Yes, Passport, but I’m lolligagging in getting it renewed and my DL was expiring anyway (though a non RealID DL would have been $30 cheaper).
That and my renewed NYC MTA discount MetroCard in the same batch of mail.

Lucky for you! In NJ, getting a Real ID DL will cost the same as a regular 4-year renewal. The kicker is that it will expire when your regular DL would have expired. So I can pay for a 4-year renewal next month, but I'll have to pay for another 4-year renewal next year.

The person seemed to make a point that she’d renewed me for 4 years, mentioning I was within a specified window (6 months?), my current DL was expiring in Nov of this year. When does NJ extension of their Real ID exemption (assuming they have one) expire? PA’s was good through most of 2020 iirc.
Otoh MTA just spontaneously sent me the new card for renewal of my card expiring on August 31 if this year.
I do really need to just gear up and renew my Passport. Nothing specifically planned but when the mood hits for heading to L’Anse Aux Meadows I’d hate to have to start that process right then.
The other oddness was a normal DL they’d have just printed up and handed to me. But “federal law” doesn’t permit Real ID issuance at Driver Photo Centers: and my local office is both a License Center snd Photo Center. So they had to mail it to me. Had I gone to a new office at King of Prussia I would have been handed my new one. Only took maybe 3 days so it was okay.

Real ID was scheduled become available in June, but only at a single, DMV location which still hasn't been disclosed. I just checked the DMV site, and there is no indication that it is actually available yet. I can get on an email list to be informed when it is.

The other cascade of consequences was unlike my older DL the new ones aren’t readable by SEPTA (no magnetic strip: they’ve one of those Q codes on the back for optical scanning) : so to retain my free rides I had to go into town and get a new SEPTA card.
Everything in my Apple iPhone Wallet would be so much simpler!

I got a RealID when I renewed my license last year, but just got a letter telling me that not only do I need to send in new info because of my move, but that I never had all the needed proof in the first place. That’s just plain wrong; I looked up the requirements and took it all with me. I think maybe they really mean “because you’ve moved your proof of address is no longer valid.” Anyway, they want 2 items, and I realize that I don’t have them. Didn’t save the verification from the PO about the address change, and utility bill isn’t in my name, even if we got paper copies, which we don’t. No rent or loan. I have to look a little deeper into what I can do to re-establish the RealID. Meanwhile, I have a passport.

You should try flying with an expired driver's license sometime.
It't great fun sitting on the Group W bench with the mother-rapers and father-stabbers...

When I renewed my passport I got a credit size passport card that I can use for Id. It is not good for flying out of the US but good for travel to Canada, Mexico or the Caribbean by land or boat. Florida’s driver license meet the real ID requirements.

Canadian entry requires a passport yes? Thinking about L’anse aus Meadows.... www.newfoundlandlabrador.com/top-destinations/lanse-aux-meadowsETA: and the answer appears to be.... sometimes. Travel by airr: yes, travel by land: no. “The Canadian government requires citizens of the United States to have a passport to fly to or transit through a Canadian airport, but not to enter Canada by land or by boat. For those travelers, in lieu of a passport, Canada requires that you carry proof of your citizenship, such as a birth certificate, certificate of citizenship or naturalization, or a Certificate of Indian Status, as well as photo identification.” www.tripsavvy.com/americans-need-passport-to-visit-canada-1481664Probably subject to change so I’d rely only on an official Canadian site but a start. Customs and Border Patrol: for land travel an “Enhanced Drivers License” aka Real ID is acceptable for entry to Canada from the U. S. and re re entryy back to the U. S. from Canada. www.cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/western-hemisphere-travel-initiative1,662 miles one way....., hmmm. Road trip!

High Sierra Fan , is that up to date? The last time we entered Canada (by car), I’m pretty sure we were required to have a passport. Or maybe that was just to get back into the US... ETA: The passport card is meant for Canada and Mexico.
