Sooooo ….. I'm guessing you're probably not dropping $59 at backpacker.com to get instant access to members-only benefits.
I philosophically support Backpacker magazine and am a loyal subscriber. I wish them well in this endeavor, but can't envision $59/year of benefits for myself. Hope their website works better than it used to.

I too am a loyal subscriber. As far as I can tell, the $59 might be worthwhile if you buy a lot of gear and want some discounts, but the other stuff seems superfluous.

Almost bought the Gear Guide issue at an airport. Thumbed through it and ended up buying the Economist. Speaking of magazines, the original fake news magazine will end monthly publishing in August. Hopefully their candidate endorsement will be successful!

Thumbed through it and ended up buying the Economist. Which usually has a bigger dose of worthwhile reads.

Seems everyone wants to be some sort of subscription service nowadays. They also may be trying to do something like backpackinglight.com I’m guessing, and I’ve been a BPL member for a decade. Averaged out my $100 BPL life membership is at $10/year and gets cheaper, though I no longer really post (seen too many tarps vs tarptent arguments). Rather I’ll look to see if there’s any new developments
Back to Backpacker, I really liked the magazine but just couldn’t deal with their shoddy subscriber customer service anymore. I’d concentrate on their magazine before this new venture. Add they do have gear discounts, so someone buying new gear from the major manufacturers could offset the subscription costs to some extent.

Much of Backpacker The Magazine is targeted to the novice or outdoor-curious who think they want to pursue the romantic notion of backpacking. Most of them will never or barely dip their toe into actual backpacking. I think this Basecamp program is targeted to those who are more serious about their naiveté, willing to plunk down a little more to get a little more prep info for that first backpacking trip that will never happen. Discounts on gear -- ooh, sounds good, except which gear? Most of us here choose the gear we want, those on the Basecamp program will choose the gear Backpacker tells them they need and offers a paltry discount to get.
IMO.
