I would have just paid the extra 84 cents Um, that's 84 cents plus tax.

Interestingly enough one of the few major chain stores in this area just remodeled a store in an upscale area and eliminated the self checkout for no limit purchases. There are still faster self serve checkouts for 12 items or less. When I asked about the reason, the door greeter was unsure why. That's a major step backward. Perhaps it's because of the area, bordering some upscale communities. Might be that those folks don't want to pack their own groceries. I used to shop at two different grocery stores, and stopped going to one of them because of the self checkout. Winn Dixie rarely had a person running a register and had no baggers. They had one person working the station with 6 or so self-checkout registers. The Publix I go to doesn't offer self checkout at all, but there are lots of folks on registers and several baggers around. I'd rather shop at a place that offers more job opportunities for people in my community. And the self checkout area in Winn Dixie is clunky----coupons never ever scan correctly, and the area to place stuff after scanning is way too small, and if you're buying beer, you have to wait for that one person working all six of those self-checkout stands to make it to you to check ID and put in a code. Winn Dixie wasn't really much cheaper price-wise than Publix, so no incentive there. Winn Dixie offered coupons for doing a survey every time you shopped there. Every single time, I'd do the survey and either talk about how great it was that they had a cashier working that day, or how much I hated the self-checkout machines. I finally decided to vote with my dollars and give all my support to Publix because they invest more in the community. A lot of the baggers at my local Publix are folks who have limited job options (my favorite bagger is a man who had a brain injury as a child---fallout from that limits what he can do). I don't mind bagging my own groceries at all, but I appreciate that Publix gives him and folks in similar situations a place to earn a paycheck.

The store I used to go to the most remodeled last year. During July and August, no less. A friend of mine is a manager there, and corporate made them remodel. The managers asked if they could at least pick the months (they wanted February/March). But, no, corporate said "we get to choose" and chose the 2 busiest months of the year here in Colorado. Then, they got rid of most of the checkout stations. Instead of 7 or 8 checkouts plus 6 self-check-outs, they went to 16 self-check-outs and 2 or 3 regular check-outs. I will not do the self-check-out if I have produce, even if I only have 4 or 5 items total. I will wait in line for the 2 regular check-outs or, more likely, go to the other store in town if I have apples or other produce.
