For those of you who have been living under a rock, the US Women's National Team just won the 2019 FIFA World Cup. I love, love this team and am over the moon about their back-to-back win. www.ussoccer.com/teams/uswntI've loved the team for 20 years now, since the 1999 World Cup. I think that 1999 national squad was pivotal in changing the position of professional women athletes in this country. (I won't go into it here since women's rights/equality is still a "political" issue in this country -- if you're interested, it's worth reading about.) But I hope that this 2019 win will bring the women on team the recognition and rewards that they deserve, for all their hard work, as well as the work and dedication of the women athletes before them. My son, who is 20, grew up with Mia Hamm (on the 1999 World Cup team) as one of his heroes. We were Boston Redsox fans in 2004 when Hamm and the US team won the gold medal at the Olympics and, as far as he was concerned, Nomar Garciaparra's most impressive feat was getting Mia to marry him. In 2015, we were on one of our annual 4th of July weekend camping trips for the World Cup final. We drove into a little town in northern Michigan and found a bar to watch the game. We got some looks when we walked in -- we'd been joking that our family could have been the 'diversity float' in the local 4th of July parade we'd seen -- especially since the US was playing Japan in the final. I'll never forget Carli Lloyd, Hope Solo and, of course, Abby Wambach, from that squad. I missed watching the final game yesterday. We were sailing back from another 4th of July camping trip. I turned on the Directv app as soon as we pulled up on the beach and the US team had just won... yeah, I was that crazy lady whooping it up on the beach.

I watched all of the matches from the Field of 16, and had both of my favorite teams make the Final. My SIL is from Amsterdam, so I had to cheer on her team until they met the US. I'll have to say, the first half yesterday gave me some appreciation for just how tough their game was.

I think at this point, this team has to be considered as one of the greatest dynasties in sports history.

Random thoughts:
They would have won that game 8-0 if not for the fantastic play of Netherland's goalie.
I was wondering if all the penalty kicks would "cheapen" the wins. But then I thought they earned all those penalty kicks due to the unrelenting pressure they put on defenses.
There is no player, man or woman, who has the foot skills of Tobin Heath. I literally feel sorry for the defender when they're 1v1 against her.
My wife and I watched the women's national team a few times (Hamm years) when they would play in Rochester (NY). One year there was a tournament, and we ended up sitting right next to the Brazilian national team.
4 years ago yesterday, my wife and I drove up to Montreal to watch the World Cup semi-final game against Germany. Good times!

I love, love this team and am over the moon about their back-to-back win. Yes! (I say that even though I missed the "live" scoring of both goals yesterday. But upon review: Rose Lavelle, the one-woman-team! Yes!)

I think at this point, this team has to be considered as one of the greatest dynasties in sports history. You would think that were the case. But FIFA seems to think otherwise about the US ladies team and all the other female teams. It's a disgrace.

I hope they prevail in their pay dispute.

I hope they prevail in their pay dispute. Me too. Considering what a shambles the men's team has been, along with their TV audience #s, and massive following for a long tournament in Europe, they've made a very good case.

I firmly believe Tobin Heath is the most underrated player we've ever had. Her technical abilities and final ball are always nearly perfect. Its a shame they never played a formation that suited her being on the ball in the middle of the field more often.

A nice video over on Youtube about the team. Some really nice game footage and shots of the players while not on the pitch.

To clarify the disparity between the men's and women's World Cup prize money... FIFA just announced that they plan to double the Women's price money for the 2023 Women's World Cup from $30 million to $60 million. The men's pot is currently $400 million. Yes, more than 10 times what the women get. They're going to increase the men's pot to $440 million for their next Cup in Qatar in 2022. FIFA president Gianni Infantino apparently thought the grand gesture to "double" the women's prize money would satisfy critics... not sure who flunked basic algebra but the disparity is actually increasing by $10 million.

Yeah, but come on... increased the women's pot by 100%, and the men's by only 10%! Totally fair! </sarcasm>

Yeah, but come on... increased the women's pot by 100%, and the men's by only 10%! Totally fair! </sarcasm> In 2006 26 billion viewers watched the men’s World Cup. 715 million people watched the final game. Of the last 8 years Forbes list of most valuable sports franchises has been topped by an “association football” aka soccer men’s team for seven of them. Three times reach for Manchester United and Real Madrid, Dallas Cowboys topped 2018. So I’m expecting participants in World Cup get a proportional cut of the revenues: and those billions of eyeballs bring in a lot more money. Otoh? The women’s USWNT base salary of $100k per player exceeds the men’s USMNT base salary by, wait for it, $100k. So the entire current discrepancy is generated by the FIFA bonuses paid to the federations: bonuses paid for by the two World Cup revenue streams. One far larger than the other....
