She was rescued from between 2 waterfalls, so she had access to water. I like the fact that the helicopter that was searching for her was paid for by crowd source funding.

Just glad she was found and is now safe. I've gotten turned around. It's no fun.

Just glad she was found and is now safe. I've gotten turned around. It's no fun. It’s that casual step off... focused on something else, bathroom privacy, a good sitting rock and the trail. Just. Isn’t. There. Yes, terrific conclusion. Far better than the woman off the AT whose remains were only found years later, a mile or so from the trail... It’s why even for totally “casual” basic tools are a good idea to carry.

That quick step off the trail for a bit of privacy is why I always have a compass in my pocket and check which direction off the trail I am going. Add to the examples the guide who took a quick step off a portage trail in the Boundary Waters, became disoriented, and then there were two groups lost: him and the group of Boy Scouts he was guiding. Fortunately both made it out eventually.

focused on something else, Yes. I was driving the other day and my mind was somewhere else. Ran a red light. And no, was not texting or celling; my mind was just somewhere else. I realized I needed to blank most of my dash displays for a similar reason. Distracting toys a little too much.

Driving defensively can also be distracting when in areas of high speeders and not very careful drivers. Watching out for the bad drivers can refocus attention very easily. Ideally, we should be able to drive offensively and defensively.

I'm glad she was found alive. But..."She figured it out, she was smart, she was strong, she was prepared. We said that in the beginning, and it was absolutely true,” said her father, John Eller".
She was absolutely unprepared.

Yes. What she was was lucky beyond imagining. A dry canyon, and even Maui has those, and she’d be gone.
And had she figured it out she’d have self extracted those four miles she’d managed to get from the trailhead.

I'm going to Maui in a month or so, and rest assured I'll be bringing the basics for every hike! I can't imagine leaving my phone behind, no matter how short of a hike.

So she went off trail to take a nap? In Maui? Not something I would consider.

She probably just stayed at a friends house for a couple weeks. Now she’ll write a book and make hundreds of dollars. Brilliant.
