You're not talking about the parts where they hiked out and then back down between sections, right? Did they *say* they were on the rim? I just watched it again recently and don't remember any sections on the rim. Mind you, there are long stretches way above the river, sometimes thousands of feet above the river, on plateaus that look like they're walking along the rim, but they're not. jazz, without a map of their route, can't really say. In the documentary there was a map of their route. I can't find it, so will defer. Just have to say some of their traverses over the void had my palms sweating.

On a boot-width strip angled toward the abyss, paved with dusty, red marble-sized gravel? ... and covered with ice and snow!

Link of their trip but am not a fan of the html/javascript coding as is awkward on my Windows 10 laptop.

They completed the route in 8 sections at different times of the year. Apparently a couple of other climbers had been systematically figuring out how using ropes and climbing gear how to negotiate over 100 difficult spots. Very little of their route was along the river itself but rather just below rim areas. In several places they crossed the river during low flow season. In other places they hiked out then at later dates drove to other rim areas back across where they had been on the other side. By hiking during winter stormy periods, they were able to negotiate some otherwise dry waterless sections due to seasonal pools and streams.
