When we hiked out, there was a msg on my phone from the ranger who was organizing the search for the missing hiker on the Escalante route, so when Tea and I stopped by the BCO to donate leftover fuel, we asked about it. Ranger told us that two brothers and a friend had hiked the route from New Hance, off-permit (their permit request had gotten turned down.) One of the brothers apparently really struggled and the group had gotten into a fight over it. The other two ultimately left him on the trail, finished the hike and flew home. Led to a big search, but he was found and is OK; wife flew out to take him home. This story still bothers my wife. She can't imagine a family so dysfunctional that this would happen to. It doesn't help her any when I say that I wouldn't leave my brother alive, but might leave his body to be found at a later date. I'd never invite him to spend an hour with me, much less a hiking trip.

I've had a ride out of the canyon due to a totally out of the blue bout of vertigo that had me unable to walk or even keep water down for many hours. A ranger I had spent an evening talking to called the chopper in for me, and gave me absolutely zero grief about it. I'd trust the rangers, the pilots and the medics any day. The GCNP has some good people looking out for us.

Just found some time and a decent PC at the Grand Canyon Library. Read the trip report. zekeGlad you're OK and hopefully no issues going forward. Very well written. jazzmomPhotos were great. I'm at GCNP now with proper tent site at Mather CG. Hang out a bit at the Hiker/Biker site near the campground kiosk. Have also crossed paths with other AZT and Hayduke hikers at the General Store. Most are totally squared away, but a few are clearly poachers. Sad to see no class hikers. The Mather CG and Backcountry Rangers go out of their way to accommodate long distance hikers. Thanks for posting.
