No, we are only in camp for 2 nights, arriving Friday afternoon and leaving Sunday morning. Saturday can be spent however you like, and there is usually multiple groups doing something appealing to all. Pick your poison. Rocky Mt Np is close by for further explorations if you like, but there are plenty of NF sights to see as well.

Still in. Other plans have changed some, but we're sticking with that one. We have a flight out of DEN Monday late afternoon, so will be finding someplace else to camp on Sunday night, if anyone wants to consider joining us.

I'm bumping this thread seeing as how tomorrow is August and I'm going to start looking at airfares... Who's still in? Thanks for bumping the thread! I have been in the middle of a move and simply have not had time to spend on the forums. My focus on this move is to be FINISHED with everything before Pickle Gulch. Making progress daily, so I might get there. Anyway, yes, it is time to make travel arrangements. YAY!

I don't think I'll be making a return trip this year, as I'll probably be in NC around then. Someday...

I was never in, but Pickle is piquing my interest. ... Is it used as a basecamp for hikes during the day? This flatlander from Chicago would have to spend some time getting acclimated to a campground ~9000 feet with hiking higher than that. I would take the whole week off, starting with some lower elevation hiking & camping. DW, I live at sea level, so I know of what you speak. If I remember correctly PG is at a bit less than 8,000 ft. Deborah, MrsD, Mike, Swims, and others will correct me if I'm wrong. I also remember that Golden - or was it Boulder - is at 5,000 ft. For me, that makes a great transition elevation. The year I went I stayed one previous night in Golden Gate something Park. I don't remember the elevation, but it seemed OK. Well, except for the bulging elk and the bear that spent most of the night trying to get my food. Alas, I'm a light sleeper. You'll need to reserve a campsite, but at that time of year you should be able to just walk up to the ranger station, fill out the form, include the money, and drop it in the box. At PG MrsD suggested a hike up to a local lake. We drove to the trailhead and hiked up. It was a nice hike. I was definitely slower than normal, but it was quite doable. I think the lake was at about 10,000 or 11,000 ft. I remember we guessed the altitude and I won, so it was around that. Elevation gain was about 2,000 ft. Quite doable, even for a coastal rat like me.

driftwoody, Reuben is correct about most of the altitude stuff. Both of my PG adventures, I flew in from sea level on Friday and climbed a 13 or 14er on Saturday. This is a potentially bad idea, but can be done. More sensible is the milder and lower hike option Reuben did. I am a bit slow and suck wind a lot under those conditions (we won’t comment on how I am when fully acclimatized, okay?), but at the elevation of the camp have no issues beyond not wanting to run. The park where Reuben stayed in Golden Gate Canyon State Park; that may be our choice for Sunday night, either front-country sites or a back-country spot. Aspens in that park could be in full gorgeous fall color (they were on my first PG trip, when RanD and I stopped there for a dayhike before proceeding to PG). So all in all, I’d encourage you to come on out to the party!

reuben and rebeccad , I appreciate the information and the welcoming encouragement. If I go I'll be hiking in the area (possibly RMNP) during the week leading up to PG, but I haven't fully explored my options yet. Whether or not I go depends on when or if I decide to have surgery on my shoulder. Playing the outfield at a softball tournament June 14 I dove for a ball, pile-driving my right shoulder into the turf. I felt a wrenching pain and couldn't lift my arm afterwards. My softball season ended with a partially torn rotator cuff and a partially torn labrum. More than a month into physical therapy I can do more things (like shift my manual trans car with my right hand instead of reaching over with my left) but I am not anywhere close to full strength and have to be careful. I think surgery is inevitable, but I really don't want to go through that again (had it for a lesser injury on my left shoulder 3 years ago). My arm would be in a sling 5 weeks, and I need the 6 month recovery to be over by mid April to not miss the start of the 2020 softball season. Whether or not I join you good folks at PG depends on whether I have the surgery before then, and if not, whether my shoulder is good enough for hiking & backpacking. I'm really struggling with the surgery decision. I have to use more than 3 weeks of vacation before the end of the year, and I don't want to spend it unable to do much of anything. I really really want to get in some good hiking first, but my shoulder is still very sketchy for that (tripping over something and falling to the ground would not be good). Also, though my wife is used to my weeklong absences, I'd be away from home on my birthday. Getting acclimated to the elevation at PG is the least of my concerns. I hope all this isn't TMI.

I am planning to go this year! I will most likely arrive a few days early and spend time in RMNP camping and taking day hikes. The always enjoy hearing the elk do their thing. I have not decided if I will fly out late Sunday or later. I am open to suggestions.
Looking forward to seeing everyone!

We are still on track to be there. We’ll be driving out from SF so can bring extra gear if needed.
