Stop worrying so much about being able to trap enough heat to adversely affect the canister. I Googled this to see if anything turned up. Definitely not unheard of. I think zeke had it right that it depends on how tight the screen is and from the articles/posts about explosions how long you cook is a factor. Maybe you can say not too tight of a screen for quick boils is OK.

I'm sure zeke is right, statistically speaking, but I'm not taking the chance. This is one of the benefits of the Kovea Spider and other remote canister stoves. Though they are heavier, they allow for the safe use of a windscreen, and are quite a bit more stable. Plus the Spider can be inverted for liquid feed mode.

I used the remnants of a #10 can. I also cut out a couple of air gaps along the bottom edge. An old one I used, I cut down through the vertical wall and folded over the edge a little, so it would wrap around my bear can while in the pack.
But, if I ever had a remote canister stove with an inversion option, I'd feel a lot better about using a wind screen at the stove itself. I just never worried about it, and tested the outer steel wall after a boil. Since I only boil a pint of water per meal, it was a quick burn.

There seems to be a growing crowd for soaking, maybe the OP could tell us what he thinks a gag free entrée would be? I dry at home salad veggies, especially cabbage, to soak and add dressings for wraps. I also like instant pinto bean flakes and powdered jerky. I like that more for lunches. Dinner and early morning, I like hot food. I also appreciate that a stove with extra fuel saved me from slipping into a bad stage of hypothermia a few years ago. XXX heretic here. I have backslid to using a liquid fuel stove on half my trips. My one White Box stove trip was a warmed up tepid mess; too cold and too high up to efficiently boil a cup of water. Not really the stove's fault. Every type has it's limits. I gave the stove to a family member that hikes in AZ-NM-CA desert and he loves it 365.He can also eat Ramen noodles cold soaking

On my most recent trip, I cold soaked the cubed chicken. I put the chicken into a small watertight container, with some water. When it was time for dinner, I drank the excess water, super yummie, and added the chicken to the dinner.
The cold soaked chicken tasted quite good and took in a bit of heat from the dinner. The added booster to the meal kept me from waking during the night to eat a night snack.

maybe the OP could tell us what he thinks a gag free entrée would be? Sorry, I am not familiar with the term Gag Free. I eat pretty much anything. I'd like dinner to be 1000 - 1500 cal, 50-60g of protein. That means it needs to be high in fat, since 200 calories would be from that protein, and I am assuming a similar amount from carbs. That brings me to including some high fat dessert in my planning. I'm not above eating butter, but it doesn't keep well.

I thought your question some, and thought of wraps and such, with a variety of rehydated fillings? Dicnentra had some good ideas in her book, "One Pan Wonders".

rangewalker I don't think I have ever taken an energy bar on a trip. The few I have tried at home, before trips, I ate one bite and tossed the rest in the trash. I pronounced them not worth carrying. That experience repeated about 4-5 times on various bars made me reach the decision that they weren't worth spending my $ on. I gave up on them.

I put one in my pocket in the morning and eat it one bite at a time over the course of the morning. I loathe most other “energy bars”: there are a couple varieties of kind bars (almond coconut and blueberry vanilla cashew) and regular granola bars that I like. I also eat Honey Stinger and GU energy chews, and the GU gels on the trail. Those are especially important to me on high elevation trips because sometimes I can’t keep anything else down for the first 2-3 days, and they’re the only thing keeping me from severe calorie deficit.

I like Taos Mountain Pinyon Coffee bars. +1 on Taos Mountain. I had the Pinyon Coffee for breakfast on my last backpacking trip. Good stuff.

Wow, those Taos Mountain bars are very good with their distribution of nutrients. They are more expensive, but have way better nutritional value than say a Snickers or my favorite Payday bar. I will definitely give them a taste test.

I don't like coffee flavored anything, hot or cold. That keeps the coffee flavored bars away.
