It's a salt flat, really. Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia, at about 12,000 feet. You can get a sunburn in minutes with the light being reflected back up from the salt. A long time ago it was a sea bed. How it got that high while remaining so dead flat is a miracle. Look up other images. When it rains (very rare) there's a thin film of water on the surface, which creates a beautiful mirror if the wind is calm. Like these. www.google.com/search?q=salar+de+uyuni+bolivia+waterIt's not recommended to hike across, although you can do it in 2 days. It's super dry, has a highly reflective surface, and there's no water at all. There's a crazy little island in the middle with trinkets and stuff. That would be your overnight location. I was on a 5 day/4 night Land Rover trip out of San Pedro de Atacama, Chile. On the way back near the border there was a sign pointing to the left for Argentina and to the right for Chile, so the directions are pretty basic. Several observatories are in the area due to the high elevation and super low humidity. The nearby Atacama desert is the driest place on earth, as measured by annual rainfall.

I haven't posted anything here in a while, but I thought this one was worth considering.

I just changed the header images. Both are great photos. They might be competing with one another, though I love the reflections of the different types of trees. Let me know what you think. The background image is by GaliWalker. GaliWalkerHigh Sierra Fan

I'll throw another one into the fray. Coolkat - I was able to size this one so it is workable. If you are not happy with it, let me know and I will change it. To everyone - I think the background image is mine. That particular size is a huge challenge. It needs to be 1000px wide by 200px high, with the subject on the left and even that is covered with the lettering. I could use more images to choose from.

I like the new pictures. The bright blue of the one promises Spring is nearby. Coolkat's is a striking image of what we strive for on this board.
